Just Watched "alien" For The First Time...

<div class="IPBDescription">huh...</div> Okay... NS doesn't rip that movie off. But some of the levels sure do. That red grating... those white "cross" shaped doors (nancy), the cockpits (bast and nancy)... I mean... lol Not bad inspiration... but... some is pretty blatant! Seen "ALIENS" a couple weeks back and thought there was very little "copying" but now I understand when some people come on saying that... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

BTW, was that ever confusing...
Read this you might, laugh you will...
I thought I was gonna see the same movie twice... "ALIEN" and "ALIENS" are different movies... gotta be on the ball for that one!

    bast was based around aliens anyway, well it started off as that corridor from alien(s?) anyway

    (check interviews on rr.org)

    Glad you finally got around to watching a great film.

    Yes, it's no secret at all that ns_bast started and still is in a lot of ways a 'tribute' of sorts to Alien. Is it a "rip-off"? No. Does it try to capture part of the atmosphere of that movie? Hell yes. Was anything actually directly taken from any form of media (footage or audio) and used? No. That would be a serious copyright problem, and it would disrespect the artists who worked on the film. Were textures and some architecture designed to resemble a few of the sets? Yes they were.

    If you're curious about where the whole similarity started, go to the "N" corridor in ns_bast. The "N" stands for "Nostromo".

    I am a little curious as to how you can say the cockpits in both maps are a rip-off of any particular movie. Every sci-fi movie ever made that involves spaceflight has had a cockpit of some kind. I just chose to make one that's a lot more claustrophobic than the "Star Trek" style bridge. The easter egg (of sorts) that used to be in ns_bast's cockpit was indeed another homage to Alien. It's gone now due to the need to reduce unnecessary entities. :/

    No, you must buy just the first two. :P

    I was gonna do an ALIENS inspired level to go w/ Relic's, but I suck and it didn't pan out.. doh.

    Okay... Relic, you don't need to get defensive about it at all! I didn't mean "rip off" in a bad way... I absolutely agree, that you nailed the atmosphere and what not real nice. The comment I made about the cockpits... well when I seen the movie (at the beginning) I just remember thinking to myself, hey that reminds me off me of NS too... of course you could easily ignore that... but the white doors and red grating textures... that's straight out of the movie! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> Again though, that's a GOOD thing. And for an old halflife engine game to look like it was from a movie... AWESOME work. Companies put out crap that you have to (uhhh yeah...) pay for with Movie liscenses that look like they are part of another world. Just one more reason to love NS.

    You guys simply nailed some great atmosphere together!

    I only watched the Aliens films a matter of weeks ago!
    I watched Alien, Aliens, Alien3, and Alien Ressurection
    all in the space of 2 nights. And I loved it! I found that the
    latter films looked great but lacked the tension. As amazing
    as the Aliens looked, I was mainly hoping to be scaed silly.
    It takes alot to scare me and after it I love the sensation!

    So being an avid AvP2 player and keen Alien during Natural-Selection,
    i used the films to gain some pointers. Although I do hate going up
    against 1 measly Marine in AvP2 and getting killed, even though in the films
    one Alien is enough to kill half the cast and a few camera men <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    (The key is to stay still and let them come to YOU! Then you strike!)

    After all this i'm dying for some AvP2.... who's coming with me

    The director's cut of Aliens rocks, I just love those automatic sentry turrets <!--emo&::sentry::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/turret.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='turret.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::sentry::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/turret.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='turret.gif'><!--endemo-->

    To me the only alien films tha exist are Alien and Aliens. I refuse to aknowledge the existance of the other two due to the fact they ruined the whole feel and concept of the first two. They were such a bloddy let down it aint funny. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I can't understand why they cut that originally. I do however understand why they cut the colonist scene with newt and her parents. Not having seen that makes the movive more exciting and suspense ladden.

    Actually I like Alien 3, great atmosphere and awesome sets. just look at the colours they used. Alien 4 is a bit bleh, but the more i see it (i bought all 4 on VHS) the more i like it.

    they cut the sentry turrets? hmm. i'm glad the first time I saw Aliens it was the director's cut. :P
  • pielemuispielemuis Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 72Members, NS1 Playtester
    i bought Aliens like 6 years ago (maybe more) and it had the sentries, it says nothing about a "director's cut"
  • KarriNKarriN Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6617Members
    Think about the sentry scene... generally, the aliens are portrayed as pretty damn smart for "simple animals". But in the sentry gun scene they just throw themselves at the sentry guns even though they see their comrades are dying. And there are LOADS of bugs dying there. Not very smart, is it? And when the sentry guns run out of ammo, do the aliens burst through? No, they find another way after wasting LOADS of bugs. So it kinda dumbs the aliens down, that might be one of the reasons they cut it.

    But it's one of the coolest scenes! <!--emo&::sentry::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/turret.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='turret.gif'><!--endemo-->
    btw, I've seen skulks do the exact same thing and they're controlled by humans <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
