fixes the stuck in 60Hz thing in XP/2000
If youre a bit slow like me, you might not have noticed this little program.

ReForce

It fixes the refreshrate problem in XP/2000 that locks all OpenGl aplications to 60Hz. Now you can confortably run NS at 85Hz or higher (if your screen can swing it). Sweet.

Maby old news but someone might have missed it. (Searchfunction didnt work today)

Edit: should this be in Techsupport?

Don't forget to look if you have V-sync on before thinking your 60fps cap is due to Windows....
Also, be sure to set your fps_max to 100 (or lower if you wanna save up on the processing power)...

HL runs at 100 fps easy for me, the trick is that I have my monitor set to a 60Hz refresh rate
stupid laptop. Nice trick, though, this reforce.

Sure you can turn off v-sync and go up to 100 fps, but youre still stuck with 60Hz running any openGL app. It will run your desktop and pretty much everything else in any Hz your comp can handle just fine, but as soon as you use openGL it goes back down to 60. Thats the problem caused by XP and 2000. I dont know how it looks on other peoples screens but i think HL looks worse running 100 fps in 60Hz than with v-synced 60fps. Without the V-sync all vertical movment looks a lot jerkier. (hence the name i guess )

But this program and a decent screen that supports 100Hz in 1024 x 768 or higher will make things look a whole lot better. And some even argue less straining for your eyes. Go figure.

w/ modern day video cards, there's no reason NOT to use v-sync, as using it increases the video quality tremendously.

    Agreed.

But there is a problem. I use ReForce to remove the 60Hz lock and now play in 85Hz. However turning V-lock on sets the fps down to 60 again. Turning V-sync off and setting fps_max 85 seems to do the trick though.

    I'd rather play w/ a good looking 60fps than a bad looking 85. :P

What more does V-sync do than sync the redrawrate to your monitors Hz setting? Is there any actual quality change or do you just mean the flickering bit? The way i figure, 85Hz and an almost constant 85fps is pretty much the same thing that V-sync should do? I would like to know how to set the V-sync thingy to match my actual Hz settings though.

Oh well.. Not my field really.

for me, when I turn off v-sync big squares making things look ugly appear from where the renderer is going way faster than the monitor refresh rate happen. I mean if I was playing a game that rammed my FPS down to 60 regardless, I wouldn't notice a difference. but when I'm doing q3 maxed at 100fps, and monitor refresh is 85, and v-sync is off, the tearing is quite noticible and ugly.

Ok then. But using this program lets you up your Hz, and play with higher fps without any jerkyness. Granted not to many people will ever notice the difference between 60 and 85 fps, but it cant hurt can it?

Anyways, i just reinstalled my system a few weeks ago and havnt really started tuning it yet so i thought i'd experiment with this a bit, but if you have a nice system you dont want to mess around with, its probably best to leave it be.

yeah, I was never ever disputing the usefullness of the program. The winxp 60hz limit really sucks. the newest Detonator drivers have overrides for D3D, but no opengl. Now i can use this, yay.

If you play NS on the laptop using a TFT screen, there is no refresh rate as such. 60 hz is just shown for compatibility's sake. A TFT screen is very calm to look at because ALL elements are lit simultaneously, whereas the CRT screen constantly draws a picture in a scanning sideways motion, making the impression of flicker. A 100 Hz refresh rate simply flickers so fast you dont notice it much.

On a side note: CRTs are made for gaming, artistery and entertainment, TFTs are made for work. Sitting in front of a CRT working for a whole day and my head gets woozy at the end of the day. I do not have that experience when working with a TFT screen. I think the constant flickering ,even if refreshrate is set very high, gets on my optic nerves so to speak.
