<div class="IPBDescription">Omina Viae per Roma</div> I just found it interesting thats "Onos" is alot like the Latin Word "Onus" which means heavy load
The NS backstory/manual (gotta love it when they're one and the same <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->) says that the onos got its name from the first marine encounter with it. The marines hear it coming, both say "oh no" at the same time, and then the transmission cuts. So they named it the Onos. Silly, but I like it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> And the Onus connection is pretty cool, too <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
I actually didn't see that part of the manual before coming up with my own theory. nice to know. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Actually the Onos' name does in fact come from the last two words uttered by the first Marines encountering them: <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Though it can seem like a joke (and one in poor taste, considering the devastation this species has caused), the name "Onos" does actually come from the phrase "Oh no."<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> You'll also be probably interested to know that the word Kharaa means "Watchout!" in Mongolian <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--><!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The first TSA encounter with the aliens occurred aboard the Mongol's Sanjii mining facility. The tattered voice comm logs they extracted from the command network had one word that stood out, used again and again ? "Kharaa!" "Kharaa!" Later, it was understood that this means "Watch out!" in Mongolian. By then, it had stuck.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Flayra and jparis maintain that "Onos" was decided upon independent of any outside influence. It was only after the names were announced and IRC regulars made the connection to "Ohno" or "Ohnos" that they decided to put that into the manual.
Personally, I draw connections between "Onos" and Kronos/Cronos, the father of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades (Saturn in Roman mythology).
What I want to know is what did Flay do with my favorite evolution, the Level 5 alien <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

you should also know there is some connection with the word Kharaa being the Arabic word for crap and the aliens being apparently made of bacteria. it all fits so beautifully i'm going to cry. it's like all the planets lining up. maybe this signals the next coming of the messiah.

Onos = Oh no. The Oh No's. Which is what you should say: "Oh no, it's an Onos!".
So, Onos = The Oh No's.
