Calling People ****

Hey guys...just wanted to talk about something I notice in a few servers. I really don't think it's appropriate when people use the word "g-a-y" as a derogatory term. Although I'm not g-a-y myself, I take offense to the use of the word g-a-y in this way. And many homosexual people I know are especially offended by this. I know this is pretty common in our society....especially among adolescents and the video game culture. I'm not saying people really do it on purpose or know what they're doing when they make those remarks. Even I said stuff like that when I was in high school. It was "That's g-a-y"...or "this is g-a-y"...or something like that. However, I've come to see that this is hurtful and a misuse of the word. By attempting to degrade people by associating them with a social class, it degrades that social class. I know most people on these forums are intelligent, respectable players, and this doesn't apply to them. However, I'd ask you to just say something to those people out there that insist on using the word g-a-y as an insult. If everyone just stops accepting it and raises awareness, it shouldn't be a problem anymore. I'm not trying to sound all high and mighty....just wanted to make a suggestion to everyone. And I apologize if someone has already made a post on the forums about this.

Wow....I can't believe it. They've had to censor the word g-a-y in the forums because people use it as a slur. I guess it's another sign of the times. I hope they don't delete this thread....I'm trying to stop this problem, not perpetuate it.

I agree. It still bugs me every time I see it, and I don't use it myself.

Totally dude. There is fine variety of slurs to use on each other. Smaktard, mother humper, yahoo... I mean the list is infinite. Just avoid ones that target a specific group of people.

I think the point was that a word used to refer to a social group should not become an insult. That way, every single time you use it as an insult, you're showing contempt for that social group. It also displays ignorance and insensitivity, not to mention lack of imagination in what you call people

It's something to phase out, to be aware of and try to mitigate.

I was thinking of making a thread like this before but i thought "whats the point" these immature people will always use it as an insult. I totally agree with you. It just shows everyone around how completley dumb you are. I mean seriously how can a gun or a tactic have sexual preferences? Bah. I dont understand how calling someone "g4y" is an insult, really i dont.

Any racial/nationalistic/homophobic comments like this are an insta-ban on Nano. Even had an argument about it with a banee a couple of weeks ago. It's a weak argument and this word shouldn't be allowed to fall into mainstream use... at least when the other derogatory comments around today were created they were relevant to their inital use.

On my CS server, I have a plugin that slaps you every time you try to say g_a_y, f_a_g, or some derivation thereof. You'd be amazed by the amount of use it gets.

Since Im a bit older it doesnt bother me much, it used to be a common term used lightly, though I do see your point, things are different now I guess. Back in Jr High and High school in the early 80's it didnt mean the same thing as now I suppose. People are people to me, I have no right to judge another person ever, got plenty of retrospect on myself first. As time goes by some of us see through the stereotyping and judging and see others as nothing more than a reflection of ourselves, what could have been and what is.

Ok winter cabin feaver is making me strange or something. Ill be better once I get the Motorcycle out of the garage.

I in no way hate any race or people group. But I find this 'over sensitivity' to be more harmful than good. We shouldn't have to tip-toe around our words when it's something vague and obviously non-derogatory as 'g**'. I may not agree with the lifestyle choices of homosexuals, but I in no way mean harm to anyone by using specific words.

Hate and fear are very big issues, especially in the US. But it seems it's only escalated by society's crusade to be 'politically correct'.

I am completely in agreement with the spirit of this thread. However, we have a filter for a reason, and even though this was posted with the best intentions, it's a topic we'd really just rather not have to worry about.
