MonsEs joke was obviously aimed at me alone, and I don't mind - in fact, seeing that he only resorts to the Third Realm when he doesn't find any valid arguments anymore, I'm starting to get used to it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->

I'm lazy, so switching to the metric system is not on my priority list. However, I do think it would be a worthwhile change. Trying to convert my Gatorade powder mix from 3/4 cups into ounces is not an easy task, when one doesn't remember how many ounces are in a cup.

In school (U.S.) I was taught both metric and engish units, and I'm comfortable with both. I think this is slowly becoming more of a trend, so that eventually everyone who only knows english measurements will grow old and die. Then we can change to metric. I think it is absurd to consider changing the measurement system of the U.S. overnight, or even over a few years. Maybe young people could easily adapt, but I can assure you there will be a 55-year-old driving along who sees a 100 km/h speed limit and goes,"hot dog, 100 mph!" ... along with a million other examples. You've got to consider the average joe who needs to grow up on these things to understand them. It's not a matter of money available to throw around and change the standards.

Even so, the quicker the change the better, because technology is becoming more and more interdisciplinary. If you've got some thermal-hydraulics engineer who uses btu and a power systems engineer using kWh on a space shuttle you're going to get something that runs out of juice before it gets 2 km above the surface of the earth (2 km? now how many miles....? heh).

I'm not saying we should have a parallel units system here, I'm just saying both systems should be taught in school, so when the eventual change happens(which it will), everyone will be ready. I think this is the current policy of most education/industry/economic advisors on this issue as well.

CW had a good post there (until he zinged me! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> ) about Canada still using both. I suppose the UK and Ireland do as well, as all my directions for my wedding in Scotland have been given to me by the locals in miles. Of course, we're all the English speakers as well, and most of the people I know from the UK get ticked if you refer to them as Europeans ^_^.

As for Ryo, lighten up. The main reason I don't care for you is your hyper-sensitive lack of any sense of humor. Also, the germans are not a race and saying that they have spent the last 4000 years in a state near constant conflict is not racism, it's just history.

Regardless of what Nem thinks of his nations' past there are others who possibly don't agree with him. I found it insulting and I'm not even German. The faq on this forum states nothing racist: excuse me if I found that comment about German people racist. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Are you suggesting that there are German posters on here who thought that the third reich was a good thing?

If there ARE then I for one am really not fussed if they are offended.

And I don't see how a comment that alludes to a German dissapproving of mass genocide could be considered racist. The problem with inferring things is that you generally condense solid BS out of the vapour of nuance.

FFS Nem, I get 50 bajillion of those a day; should I just censor myself then? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> I already have to re-write my ryo responses 10 times on every post, because they usually come out looking like:

    **** you you **** **** **** with a **** up your **** ****! ****!!!

EDIT: Ohh, now you've done it! Grendel is in here. He doesn't even take his gloves off - he never had any gloves. Must of beaten some guy to death with the gloves with Gren was 5... Heh heh.

As enjoyable as this is, I really don't think we'll be able to get back to the discussion at hand, so I say we close this thread and move the remaining chit-chat to the cheapest bar we can find.
