I'm actually asked this quite a lot - so to clarify:
The name Grendel comes from an ancient piece of Danish folklore, called Beowulf. In this, the Grendel is a monster who has slain many brave warriors. Beowulf comes along and slays Grendel. Then he slays Grendel's mum too, who is even bigger and nastier.
I use the nick Grendel with reference to Matt Wagner's character in his graphic novels. The original character to adopt the Grendel persona is an author, olympic fencer and criminal mastermind, called Hunter Rose. The Grendel persona is then adopted by several other people throughout the time line of Matt Wagner's (and other guest authors) work to the far future when the adoption of the Grendel mask has become a religion. Throughout the books, the persona of the Grendel symbolises personal Independence, competence, aggression and a willingness to do whatever is required to fulfil the Grendel's goal. The books by Wagner reach their conclusion with Grendel Prime who is a cyborg assigned to protect the rightful heir to the throne of Orion Assante.
Whilst fantastical sounding, they aren't comic books and the characters in them aren't super heroes. Essentially Wagner deals with the concept of hiding behind a mask and the effect this has on a person's psyche. The various graphic novels portray the whole gamut of human behaviour; adultery, child abuse, politics, corruption, forbidden, platonic and romantic love, mysticism, cruelty, ambition and murder.
The best book to start off with is "Devil By The Deed" a tale of the life of first Grendel, Hunter Rose. There's no dialogue, with the work being comprised entirely of narrative and panels with an art deco feel. If you are literate and enjoy quality art, you are doing yourself a disservice by not going out and purchasing yourself a copy.
I hope this clears things up.
And yes, I am aware that the name Grendel is used in a number of other works, not least the elaborate Tamogochi-em-up "Creatures".

heh my old name used to be GoldenJack9 on videogames but when i converted to halflife i started using (13)player. It also derives from an old high school nick-name, everyone called me BillGore(My real name is Bill) because I can yell like a barbarian, it's kinda stuck since then.

Long Version:
Interestingly enough, I did some research after the Lord of the Rings came out, to figure out where Games Workshop got the name from... Ghazghkul and Mag are from their own variation of orkish, "uruk" means "orc" in Tolkein's works, and "Thraka" is again from Tolkein... It's a bit of Black Speech meaning "to bring" or something. It's one of the words inscribed on the One Ring... It's in the line "One Ring to BRING them all."
Course, when I took it, all I thought I was doing was jacking some big ork's last name.

As some of you may know my name used to be Necrophiliac, which came around in real life from living next to a cemetary, being single, and not sleeping alot....hmmm
