Mapping is having 1000-3000 cubes, carving here, simple vertex manipilation there, make a hallway out of it, texture it, find leaks, place lights, to hear ppl moaning about ballance and tons of details.
Modeling is having 200-2000 3D points (vertex) connected with triangles (polygons) to one object, complex (!!!) vertex manipulation everywere, attatching each point to a bone-system, attatching textures with a UVW-map (2d->3d projection of each triangle on a texture), animating the bone system, writing a **** .qc (txt) file with hitboxes and names (for KI/behaviour and all the animation parameters) to see your model somewere in a map.
Modeling is much more free and detailed qualitative. Mapping is always a more quantitative work. Its easy to find models of any kind in the internet to convert and manipulate them quicly to what you want.

on the other hand, modelers often get more respect than mappers do, and they can SEE their products being used by mappers. mappers often see their maps ignored......
One thing to remember is that mapping takes time, one map could take you months, while a model not so much. Of course this depends on the mapper/modeler but the promedium is months.
its not illegal to attempt mapping and put it out on the internet, you(the beginner at mapping) may look upon your own map as somthing of startling magnificence while by other, more experienced mappers, it might look just utter crap... you shouldve seen my mapping at the beginning, thought hl textures was the best to use for online maps <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
well m8 at the end of the day, its your choice, but i would say modeling.
all u need is 2 days of hard learning of tutorials.
and once u have learned that get modeling progs eg milkshape, hlmv and MAX if u want.
then press on with modeling.
i spose mappers and modelers get the same kick when they see people enjoying or using there maps or models, i mean i love crafting sumthing then seeing it work perfect and people using it.
mapping in worldcraft (sorry VHE) is easy, and modelling is also very easy. i use both methods and its good to try both styles of mod making. although they (the various applications) have little in common with each other, and there is no "crossover" methods from one application to the other its still interesting.

Think bout that one, cuz Im sure youve seen alot of ****-maps in your gaming-life.
as u can tell i live in the model forum.
