Multiple Ns Servers On Same Machine

<div class="IPBDescription">Does it work?</div> I am planning on running a couple of NS servers on on linux box with the Specs at 1 gig duron and 512 megs of ram hosted off of a oc3. I waswondering if three or so servers with 14 ppl at atime would make lags on all the servers hosted, severly lagged. I used to run CS servers and I know that that is not the case there, but in CS there are not as many Entities as there are in NS. I know that there is a big diffence, and the possibility of runnig multipule servers would be excellent.

    I run one 16/18 player server off a of a Tbird 1.33/768/multiOC.

With 16 players, the lowest pings are about 160 on ns_hera or bast, the <b>optimized versions.</b> I put it up to 18 and pings hover at about 200. It is still perfectly playable but the lag is apparent when speccing while dead, as spectators are first to lose cpu priority.

You'll probably be able to host one 14 player server with no problems.

I have a dual processor 1.266ghz server with 1gb ram.

I run 2, 18 person servers on it just fine. Occasionally, I will get lag on one server if the other is going nuts (I don't have the processes bound to a single CPU yet).

They run quite fine the way it is (around 80% CPU). A single 1ghz server might be hurting though.

I will follow up on this later... kind of sick this weekend and cant concentrate.

    on a 1 gig Duron, I'd probably only run 1 14 - 16 player server per processor.

    i tried that on a 1.33ghz tbird....unplayable man.

i have a 2000xp and could maybe max out with 18.

but i run 12 right now for playability

    14-16 unplayable on a 1.33 tbird? You were doing something wrong. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

ok that's assuming your using win xp and have it fairly tweaked. I have run a 12 player server on my duron 800 laptop and it was fine... even bast

Just to give everyone a head's up here: we've been low-key so far, but NS 1.1 will do a lot to lower the CPU utilization on servers. A lot to do with changes that can finally be made due to the client-side nature of the patch.

Tell a friend and stay tuned.

    Oh thank goodness.
I'm sure that it won't go way down.. But even a 10% decrease in CPU use would be nice. I'm still so leary of NS's processor use, that I still run my web, and saql servers in a different box. Would be nice to have it all one box, without having to go to a dual proc system.

well we have tested it and well, it runs really well after a mine test of 75+ mines with an onos running about 3/4 of the way through it. and then they started again, and it crashed the server which is not a big deal, but over the whole ordeal their pings were like 100-130, after they had built everything, 3 hives the whole deal, everything maxed.

Not bad, but still room for improvement, and I mean it all depends on how you tweak it, which we did a pretty good job, but we need to do more! ultimately this will be a public server, but we want to test it out for sure so, those who want to check it out, flatline-server.com. It is server #2, it will be up and down right now to be able to tweak.

i run my soft-RAID5, apache2+php, samba (heavy hit by me) w/o effecting the game at all

I have overlord running and i watch the pings....they never seem to go up.

I run LAMP/PHP on the same box as my NS server. I gave the NS server cpu priority and have noticed no slowdown on the web page serving.

It will likely be much more than 10%. After the initial testing, the usage has been MUCH lower. I won't give you real numbers until my statistical sampling has continued for a bit, but expect big gains. I will try to get some numbers together this week, as it's a big headline to the next PR blitz.

Yep, MonsE beat me to it. You'll see quite a big performance improvement for most maps. :)

For those of you that missed it before Flayra's edit, he said that most the enhancements were on the server-side and not client side.

I wonder how many people I can get on a 1Ghz AMD with 512MB ram running windows 2K? Maybe 18?
