Communication Question And...

And an admin question.

The communciation questions comes from the fact that ever since one week after NS came out, having played it that long, I have never once had a working, aduible, understandable voice com set up. When people /can/ hear me, they describe it with such savory words as "Crappy" "staticy" and "my ears are being raped". Most of the time, however, they cant hear me at all.

I use a microsoft plantronics headset-mic, I know for a fact it's plugged up right, and I run windows 2000. I raised my sound settings mic volume, my CARDS Mic volume, which is a sound blaster 5.1 surrond platnium, and finally that voice transmit volume setting in NS I found a few weeks ago. Nothing. The headset seems not to transmit at all, and when I use a hand held mic, the crappy transmission insues.

The other question might not fit here, but I didnt' know where else to put it. Anyone know where i can go to find an EASY TO UNDERSTAND admining lesson? I mean i Have no idea how to be an admin, what the commands are or do, where to even get a LIST of commands...my admin skill starts and starts with sv_cheats 1. Threads? Sites? Downloads? ALL of the above?

Any help with either would be greatly appriciated.

I don't know how to fix your mic, but if your playing on your own server and have "sv_cheats 1" go to this website:

    <a href='http://vgstrategies.about.com/library/doswin/blhalflifenaturalselection.htm' target='_blank'>http://vgstrategies.about.com/library/dosw...alselection.htm</a>

If you mean commands for AdminMod, go to console and type admin_help.

Your mic problems could be any number of things, try using sound recorder to record your voice and play it back again. Most commonly misconfigured settings are setting the volume too high or too low, not muting the mic play through (hence feedback) setting the wrong recording device in audio properties ,not applying mic boost(+20db) when needed or applying it whaen not needed.

You can also select test hardware in your audio/voice properties to see if its your mic or your net.

There is plenty of admin advice on www.planethalf-life.com if you look. More specific questions can be answered on the valve admin mailing list or in the relevent forum here...
