I'd Like To Watch Matches

without taking a players place
As the topic says, I'd like to join a game as a spectator without actually taking a players slot. If only 12 players can join a game, I don't want to disadvantage either team by spectating. I want to watch a 6 on 6 match, not a 5 on 6. Is there any way to do this? I'd like to watch build queues and strategies. Alternatively, can anyone suggest a site for downloading demos? Preferably clan or tournament demos?

Finally, as someone who has not played online yet, can anyone recomend a newbie friendly server? I don't want to join a game on a clan or private server. Is there an ettiquet regarding which servers to join?

Thanks.

Best advice I can give you is for you to anounce you are an utter nOOb on what ever server you join. Then ask if the players would mind if you stay and watch or stay and play. Then tell them, if they say you can play, that you want to help in any way you can so any tips and advice they have you will listen too.

Some people will shun you, but others will be glad to help.

As for the spectating, if they have it on try to join large player limit servers so you run less risk of unbalancing a team. In 9-9+ matchups one player difference really doesn't make as much of an impact as on a 8-8 to 6-6 server.

When NS 1.1 comes out, you will be able to do this via HLTV. HLTV proxies the connections (so you can have theoretically hundreds of people watching a match but not playing). You can watch games, have your own map views, spectate as a player in first-person, etc. Check out this thread for more info.

    Coming soon.

Thanks all. I'm really looking forward to playing this online, as my only experience has been on LANs with friends (so we all use horrible tactics )
