    Plaintext passwords! Eeek!

Use SFTP or SCP. Good SFTP clients are hard to come by, that there's a wicked windows GUI'd SCP for those who don't have *nix workstations:

Oh, wait, does proftpd have sftp in it now? I usually just use the sftp subsystem part of OpenSSH.

    Why?

2.95.x versions of gcc work just fine. I guess if you _have_ to run spanky new compilers, 3.2.1 or whatever is supposedly fairly workable.

After a rigorous installation (6 hours roughly, from stage 1) gentoo is finally ready to go. I love it so far. I love emerge and the whole package system. I love it's speed, and well... hopefully I'll love it's server stability. In due time, we shall see.

i have to update the compiler if i wan't to update the glibc. I tried and it told me my gcc is too old. so thats the reason i'm updating to 3.2.2 gcc.

Yeah I know, but I have had lockeddown wu-ftp hacked twice in 3 days and had proftp anonymous up (different box) for six months with 0 problems. I would go with a sftp but im only allowing local network access at this time. Any ftp program that is open the net is insecure.
