I've got a second little box sittin here that I can toy with and I was wondering what distro I should go with. Slackware / debian / gentoo are all prospects. So, whatcha think?

    If your looking for something new to try use YOPER. If you havent played with them yet I recommend Debian or Slackware.

    Gentoo has a nice package systems, but it loses it's novelty after a while. I used it for about...2 weeks then switched back to slack <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    Yeah, I also think freebsd would be good. In fact let me empthesize, make it cost less (box version), and I would support them. I don't remember how much it costs now a days.

    I'm sick of RedHat, seems to n00bie friendly <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> and although I'm a n00b to linux I want something that's gonna give me great performance and something I can learn on as well without all the nifty easy featuers. I'm leaning towards Gentoo but slackware is starting to to peak my interests.

    I've used both slackware and gentoo, liked both. I get more performance out of my box (game server wise) with gentoo than i did with slack, and gentoo has a really cool package system. But you really can't go wrong with either one. Those are the two I always tell people to go with.

    If you want to support the FreeBSD project, I recommend ordering media from one of:

    It will cost you 40 bones and no stones for the CDs. If you don't have the spare rocks, but have a fast internet connection, download the installation floppies and do an FTP installation.

    Be warned, the linux_base port (linux binary compatibility) was recently busted a bit. I have a PR filed with a fix, but it hasn't made it into the ports tree yet. Check out <a href='http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/47573' target='_blank'>http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/47573</a> . The fix is a simple alteration to a few files before installing the port.

    Well, my uptime is 00:00:00 because I can't even get Gentoo installed! Argh.. the emerge sync sequence fails everytime and I can't do a ifconfig -a or ip addr to check if it's seeing my nic.

    does lsmod show your nic?

    i beleive u have the game as mine and your doing what i did. trying to install from rc1 instead of rc2

    lol, if you run slack u have to update your gcc and glibc because it is packaged with 2.95.3 and like 1.2 glibc i found out....silly me

    oh well...i'm trying to update mine but i keep failing on "iconv" sooooo i think i need to recompile gcc with i686 arch first...then glibc under i686...then REcompile gcc with athlon-xp arch.....then REcompile glibc with athlon-xp arch....and gcc for the last time with athlon-xp arch.



    (btw, thats how gentoo does it...it just has a "emerge" script to do it for ya)

    What exactly is wrong with gcc 2.95? I've never had the need to update it....

    Anyhoo, Spiffy, I hope you're not planning on compiling X or GNOME... It sucks mighty hard when you're sleeping hoping that you don't get any cryptic compile errors and you wake up to realize you've just wasted a nights worth of electricity.

    I suppose if you're running a server you shouldn't be stupid enough to install them in the first place...

    No *real* distro doesn't give you an easy way to opt out of installing all that new-fangled stuff. With gentoo, you've got to emerge the ebuild, so it's more of an opt-in thing. Now, we must convince spammers to take notes from gentoo...

    I been using Linux since 1999 for servers. I used to love redhat, but recently it seems that the install for it is huge. A base install is like 1 gig, unless you trim stuff. Then of course you run into rpm depencies. So about 6 months ago I started mucking more with other distro's. I love Slackware for its simplicity, but for server you can't beat Debian3.0. I did just a base install (70 megs), then after reboot cancelled deslect or any other package install program. Instead I did 'apt-get install ssh', installed that and ran the rest of the install from my workstation box. Well inorder to get NS to run I had to add the following software:

    gdb - debugger
    screen - nice app to launch ns with
    proftpd - nice secure ftp (dont open anonymous) used to upload files

    Thats it!

    My box now can run NS, CS, TOD and I didnt have to muck with all those rpm's. Just 'apt-get'.

    Debian - My Linux choice

    i have yet to give debian a serious try. I like the flexablity of gentoo but i have yet to get a successful install (only tried a few times...i know what my problem is just haven't tried again to fix it)

    I'm using slackware 8.1 right now...but i have to update the glibc and gcc compiler <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    amoung other things...but i'm not disappointed.

    Use SFTP or SCP. Good SFTP clients are hard to come by, that there's a wicked windows GUI'd SCP for those who don't have *nix workstations:
