Rh 8.0 And Upgrading Kernel

SpiffyJrSpiffyJr Join Date: 2002-12-06 Member: 10518Members

why oh why....
I'm browin the redhat network and I notice that my kernel isn't completely up to date on my server. I download the little rpm and do a rpm -Uvh filename to install the new kernel. All goes well, I reboot and then blame... on startup I get a "error loading modules dependency: /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/modules.dep: file does not exist" error. I thought, hrmm strange, the update was for 2.4.18-24.8.0 and yet it was lookin for the old version. Well, the box still boots and I get

Red Hat Linux release 8.0 (Psyche)
Kernel 2.4.18-14 on an i686 (WTF!)

It's supposed to be 2.4.18-24.8.0... what did I do wrong?!?! Ethernet isn't workin among a host of other things.

    Scratch that, I rebooted and it won't boot up now. Just gonna format and start over. If anyone can instruct me on how to update the kernel properly, please post here. Thanks.

    don't confuse yourself more than you have to, just use up2date if its not a big deal to you, if you REALLY need to grab the latest kernels and install em yourself then you should grab a tarball and compile em. Other than that just use up2date to update the kernel.

    RH = evil.

    www.tldp.org

    read on how to make and install your own kernels instead of that precompiled crap.

    Don't listen to cracker. The RedHat precompiled Kernels work fine. I use RedHat 7.3 and any time I want to update the kernel I just use the up2date command. Works like a charm.

    yea.. RH stole that from Debian.. and it accutally works with out breaking crap on Debian .. plus RH's libs are hosed!! RH=WIN98 .. Debian/Slackware = Windows2k advanced server .. (and no I'm not saying windows even comes close to linux.. I'm just making a comparision between the RH distro and the GOOD linux distros)

    RedHat is a great OS!, Bottom line. Sure there is tons but its just about what people like. Redhat Works, Its highly used, Easy to use, Easy to update and keep up2date, Alot of things are made using it, Works, Perty(gentoo looks pretty cool too, too bad the install wasn't a bit easier), And it has been around for some time!, up2date --configure, look thru there and look for kernel*(packageskiplist) and put that # in, erase the stuff in there©, and hit enter to save it. Then just up2date -u and it will update everything it knows is out of date. Ahh, Up2date kicks some ****!

    aawwww......too bad the RH libs are kinda broken

    and don't tell me they aren't because i coun't compile anything that was compatible.

    I don't think RH libs are build --add-ons= ./linuxthreads because everything seems to be incompatible with linuxthreads will fix.

    Just tell up2date to force(-f) the update.

    ie.> up2date -f kernel
