Any time you join a server and see the message on your console at connection:
WARNING! This server is set to allow admins to run commands on your client.
Then you run the risk of having the admins there fux0r your keys, make you quit out of the game, and all sorts of naughty stuff.
Whether or not it's ethical, they CAN... and some of them WILL... even if it's not FAIR.
You don't get on the Virus Writers forums and complain that they don't have the right to run their code on your machine. You get antivirus software. You don't complain that hackers have set up a kitty-pr0n FTP site on your harddrive and its not fair. You get a firewall. You don't walk alone downtown at 3:00am with $100 bills hanging out of your pockets and whine about getting mugged.
I remember a while back in the PlanetFortress TPF Forum, someone was complaining about some griefers who had set up their own SERVER just to screw up the games of newbies!!! People were joining and getting their keys rebound and their configurations screwed up while the griefer admins laughed, then kicked off to suffer, not knowing how to repair the damage. TFC probably lost a lot of new players because of that.
When you see that message, it's YOUR CHOICE to stay or bail. If you choose to stay, the you've accepted the risk of playing there.
Admins with client-exec powers CAN:
- change your name to "Llama" or worse - unbind all of your keys or rebind them in creative ways - crank your volume ALL the way up - set your Field Of View to something obnoxious like 99999 - make you quit out of the game back to your desktop - make you drop all of your weapons - rebind your mouse1 to "say Bang!" so that you're standing there shouting "Bang!" at the grinning skulk who is chewing on your ankles while his teammates laugh themselves incontinent - make you run in little circles hopping up and down and shouting that you're a gerbil and someone should get the duct-tape
Get the point? ANYTHING you can do in game, they can do to you, even stuff you don't wanna do.
As an admin, I can bork your game so badly that you'll want to reinstall it to fix it. Want some examples? Go to the AdminMod plugin page and look for anti-speedcheat plugins. There's some MEAN ones there. (admins hate speedcheaters.)
I'm not saying it's RIGHT, I'm saying it's POSSIBLE. So BACK UP your config.cfg file, READ your console on connection, and if you get admin abuse, don't go back. Like the man said, "Vote with your feet." You should also try and send the server owner an email about he incident as soon as possible. If the owner doesn't know about he admin's behavior, then they need to know.
There's over 5000 HL servers out here, with more than 500 of them playing NS. If you don't like what's going on at one, go to another.
But here's the kicker...
If you find a good server... one that you get a good ping on, that has like-minded players, that has responsible admins, where you can play good games...
Go back there and tell all of your friends to go there too!!! Tell the admins and the server owners that you like the server, and that you appreciate the work and $$$ they've put into making it a good place to play. and don't act like a llama when you're there, or you'll get banned.

I've been banned from 2 servers for simply placing mines around the entrace to the base. My friend was the comm, so he kept giving me mines when I needed them. I proceeded to mine the door up very nicely, then we both got banned. I have only been banned twice in my entire gaming career. Both times on TFC servers. The first time was because the admin was a little beeyotch and didnt like me killing him repeatedly. That server didnt last too long if I remember correctly. The 2nd ban I dont know what the f*ck happened as I hadnt played TFC for months and when I tried to enter the server in question I saw that I was banned. The only thing I can think of that would cause me to get banned would be someone else using my won id or something.
Even though I have been banned only twice I have encountered mean, jerkwad admins quite frequently. Just last week I ran into a real jerk of a admin on a NS server. Didnt get banned tho. Jerks are plentiful in this world. You just gotta learn to deal with them.

We were playing on [DoGs] server, because it was one of our favorites. We played there at least once every two days. Usually it was just me and one of my regulars, but we had one of our mutual friends in there with us. Two marine, one alien. The guy who was on the alien team ended up getting banned by a [DoGs] member because he sounded like a guy they'd been having problems with.
Once again... he <i>sounded</i> like some guy.
Needless to say, we were a bit upset with this. We sent a few emails to DoGs, explaining what happened. No, they weren't flames or anything, just a "hey, what gives" sort of thing. The ban ended up being lifted... I think it was the next day. I'm not sure who worked it out, I'm just glad DoGs saw what happened and realized the error. Guys, I hope you're still running a great server; always a pleasure.
As to the person who claims you're supposed to be 18 to purchase the game, I'm looking at my CD case for half-life game of the year edition, and I don't see a sticker on it that has any kind of parental advisory sticker on it. Please explain? Last time I checked, the PA stickers (which again, I don't see on this cd) were to prevent anyone younger than 17 (which is younger than 18) from buying the product. server admins like to think they are special, i was palying "EnemyWithin's NS" a few weeks ago and a random guy who said he was admin was the gorge, kept building OC's in improper places, then built one DC, i told him to get more so carapace is worth the effort, he kept saying that he would play his own way!
anyway, whatever, newbies are excusable, forgivable.
but most of the team was shouting to get more DC's and this admin was getting angry, later when i died i made a comment that "if ONLY i had a decent carapace..." and poof i was staring at the console.

Not that i'm even sure if the English version has an 18 rating or not, but our ratings go: 12, 15, 18.

lol, I wonder how many of these stories are missing a few key elements too em ;D I know there are bad admins (comprox showed us that ,lol I love it ;D) and dear god, I didn't realize just what the 'run commands on your comp' ment. Thats just wrong (I know how to compleatly screw over a config of HL with out any special stuff (write your self an infinate loop, you can't doo anything, even pull the concole to kill it ;D)
wow, hmm just what can the 'run commands on your client' stuff do? can it only run normal/admin mod concole commands, or can it do even more screwy **** stuff? Thinking of some one blasting volume, that would kill some one's speakers. Now I am tempted to go find a hack that catxhes commands like that and kills em. yeash.

tangent: playing on one of the modded TFC servers (they are fun for a few laughs) it had fly and trails, so I basicaly set up a little script that would run through the trail colors (basicaly fly around, hit a key and I would draw a rainbow). SO I got tired of hitting the key, so I made my alias call itself. OOPS!

that just aint right. I understand the idea (I know how it caught osme of the old cheats)
however now I am tempted ot go find a working version of OGC (they had a meathod of getting around this)

Seeing how that the only NS server I play on is my clans server, and we only really get regulars there, people I know, I am an admin there, I've never really gotten banned. Even back when I played CS and DoD I never really got banned because I'm not good enough to skool everyone, and I dont really curse at the top of my lungs too often. No wait, I think there was one time I was banned once, somewhere, on a CS server I think, for a reason I cant remember. But anyway, what exactly can admin_execclient do?
I got kicked a few weeks back while playing as a gorge. Not that I was doing anything wrong or hurting the team. An admin joined the game and announced he wanted to be gorge, so I had to switch. When I ignored him, i got kicked. I wasn't banned, butI could care less because I won't go there again.
There are always going to be abusive admins. Bottom line is, if you don't like the admins, don't go to their server.

this will basicaly: freez you, unbind all your stuff, bind ` and ~ to say comands and some other stupid stuff. Combine this with also putting you volume as high as it will go, and screwing you vdeo. and well you are royaly screwed if you don't have a back up of your config file (go copy it now)

unbindall, wont that change what your ~ key is bound to?
and alt tab will not reset all of your configs, it will simply get you out of the program (or you could just open task manager. I would like to point out that I am not computer illiterate)
so yah, an unbindall should remove your console also, as well as console 0 removing it anyway
Heh finaly found this topic again after a while, anyway, as to my comments a page ago, I haven't found much problem with admin's unbinding things etc (it's never happened to me), I was just stating an idea. As I said in my post I accept the risk as a server admin that if I am a bad admin I will lose all my players
after all if I didn't run the server, the regulars I have (and there are a lot of them) wouldn't enjoy the company of players they do. Sure they'd go eslewhere and probably have as good a time, but if it wasn't for the large number of people willing to put up decent, adminned public servers there'd be VERY FEW PLACES FOR PEOPLE TO PLAY.
I treat every person who joins my server with respect until they do something to dislodge that respect I have *given* them on *my* server.
If I am an ****, I thoroughly expect people to leave my server permanently and accept it too.
Fact is there are a LOT of complete d*ckwads out there, and I won't hesitate to ban them on the spot. I find it keeps my server relatively clean of cretins.

Oh god where to begin... oh wait its easy: Voogru. Admin abuse on 3 separate occasions, spaced far apart too more than 2 weeks each time. I don't need to detail any specific encounters, but I really want to tell you about the final one which reminded me to never touch voogru again:
I had bitched about voogru here on the forum in response to some post by someone bitching about voogru as well (its a popular and easy thing to **** about, seeing as how badly the server sucks because of the admins, but I digress...) and King kahuna popped on the thread and told me they had kicked off a bunch of idiots admins blah blah blah they had all reformed. So I decided what the hell, I'll give them another chance who knows maybe I just had bad luck. I joined Voogru in the evening during a game that king kahuna was in to say hi and see how the server was going.
30 seconds after joining I went gorg to build defense at hive (with only 1 gorg on the team with 9 people) and I was admin killed, no explanation. For good riddance, upon respawn I was killed again without explanation, and then kicked before i could respawn again. I rejoined and this time joined marine simply to ask why the hell voogru server is such a pile of garbage and maybe get an answer in person, and I joined the marine team to see an admin (I dont remember which one you have so many) spawning GLs and HMGs all over the place, not even near buildings or anything, he dropped like 100 all in a row, then he dropped jetpacks cause the comm wouldnt give them any (i dont even think he had teched them) and then he admin killed the comm too and did that llama thing to him. I flamed the hell out of everyone present at that point and left. Im not gonna lie, I was verbally abusive to the entire server at the end, and you **** deserved it after a display like that.

I don't say I like king (I personaly think that he is act rather obnoxiously rather often, but I sorta don't blame him with the amount of flack voogru's attracts)
I have hoped over to their board every so often, and though yes, many of them do act like elitest jerks, they are still very clear as to why people get each punishment, and if people do abuse power things get corrected. I have not yet seen a truly substancieated complaint of admin misconduct on voogru's servs (technicaly kings servers)

As to the person who claims you're supposed to be 18 to purchase the game, I'm looking at my CD case for half-life game of the year edition, and I don't see a sticker on it that has any kind of parental advisory sticker on it. Please explain? Last time I checked, the PA stickers (which again, I don't see on this cd) were to prevent anyone younger than 17 (which is younger than 18) from buying the product. I think he was reffering to the fact that the game is rated "M". As per ESRB.org, an "M" rating equates to "MATURE
Content may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. May contain mature sexual themes or more intense violence or language."
I joned some ranom server, and my list of 8 good servers were all full. So, a few guys ask about the icon beside my name. I tell them, yup, it is an NS Guide icon. Then oen guys starts a military drill test on me: 'Whadda means NS Guide? PLaytest NS? What do you do exactly? Why is there an icon if all you do is test? Why have *I* never seen one before?" on and on. Then he finally deduces I am really some "Shcmuck who is a ****ing jerk, and hacking the server". anyway, whatever, newbies are excusable, forgivable.
but most of the team was shouting to get more DC's and this admin was getting angry, later when i died i made a comment that "if ONLY i had a decent carapace..." and poof i was staring at the console.

Not that i'm even sure if the English version has an 18 rating or not, but our ratings go: 12, 15, 18.

I know there are bad admins (comprox showed us that ,lol I love it ;D)
and dear god, I didn't realize just what the 'run commands on your comp' ment. Thats just wrong (I know how to compleatly screw over a config of HL with out any special stuff (write your self an infinate loop, you can't doo anything, even pull the concole to kill it ;D)
wow, hmm just what can the 'run commands on your client' stuff do? can it only run normal/admin mod concole commands, or can it do even more screwy **** stuff? Thinking of some one blasting volume, that would kill some one's speakers. Now I am tempted to go find a hack that catxhes commands like that and kills em. yeash.

playing on one of the modded TFC servers (they are fun for a few laughs)
it had fly and trails, so I basicaly set up a little script that would run through the trail colors (basicaly fly around, hit a key and I would draw a rainbow). SO I got tired of hitting the key, so I made my alias call itself. OOPS!
however now I am tempted ot go find a working version of OGC (they had a meathod of getting around this)
oh and side note:
I know about cheats b/c I have used most of em simply as research (I want to know just what to look for, and just what cheats can do)
No wait, I think there was one time I was banned once, somewhere, on a CS server I think, for a reason I cant remember. But anyway, what exactly can admin_execclient do?
There are always going to be abusive admins. Bottom line is, if you don't like the admins, don't go to their server.
if you can do something by typing it in to your console, you can do it with execclient
and possibly more
screw configs, run Iloops, screw with sound, video, what not

this will basicaly:
freez you, unbind all your stuff, bind ` and ~ to say comands and some other stupid stuff. Combine this with also putting you volume as high as it will go, and screwing you vdeo. and well you are royaly screwed if you don't have a back up of your config file (go copy it now)

unbindall, wont that change what your ~ key is bound to?
and alt tab will not reset all of your configs, it will simply get you out of the program (or you could just open task manager. I would like to point out that I am not computer illiterate)
so yah, an unbindall should remove your console also, as well as console 0 removing it anyway

As I said in my post I accept the risk as a server admin that if I am a bad admin I will lose all my players
after all if I didn't run the server, the regulars I have (and there are a lot of them) wouldn't enjoy the company of players they do. Sure they'd go eslewhere and probably have as good a time, but if it wasn't for the large number of people willing to put up decent, adminned public servers there'd be VERY FEW PLACES FOR PEOPLE TO PLAY.
I treat every person who joins my server with respect until they do something to dislodge that respect I have *given* them on *my* server.
If I am an ****, I thoroughly expect people to leave my server permanently and accept it too.
Fact is there are a LOT of complete d*ckwads out there, and I won't hesitate to ban them on the spot. I find it keeps my server relatively clean of cretins.
I say: "it's my server I have the right to do what I want to who I want on it" (those are the terms of agreement when you join after all)
If I want to get a clean, good place for decent, NS loving people to play, let it be my perogative.
I had bitched about voogru here on the forum in response to some post by someone bitching about voogru as well (its a popular and easy thing to **** about, seeing as how badly the server sucks because of the admins, but I digress...) and King kahuna popped on the thread and told me they had kicked off a bunch of idiots admins blah blah blah they had all reformed. So I decided what the hell, I'll give them another chance who knows maybe I just had bad luck. I joined Voogru in the evening during a game that king kahuna was in to say hi and see how the server was going.
30 seconds after joining I went gorg to build defense at hive (with only 1 gorg on the team with 9 people) and I was admin killed, no explanation. For good riddance, upon respawn I was killed again without explanation, and then kicked before i could respawn again. I rejoined and this time joined marine simply to ask why the hell voogru server is such a pile of garbage and maybe get an answer in person, and I joined the marine team to see an admin (I dont remember which one you have so many) spawning GLs and HMGs all over the place, not even near buildings or anything, he dropped like 100 all in a row, then he dropped jetpacks cause the comm wouldnt give them any (i dont even think he had teched them) and then he admin killed the comm too and did that llama thing to him. I flamed the hell out of everyone present at that point and left. Im not gonna lie, I was verbally abusive to the entire server at the end, and you **** deserved it after a display like that.

I don't say I like king (I personaly think that he is act rather obnoxiously rather often, but I sorta don't blame him with the amount of flack voogru's attracts)
I have hoped over to their board every so often, and though yes, many of them do act like elitest jerks, they are still very clear as to why people get each punishment, and if people do abuse power things get corrected. I have not yet seen a truly substancieated complaint of admin misconduct on voogru's servs (technicaly kings servers)
