<div class="IPBDescription">Pings suck. But it is NOT 1.04s fault...</div> Well, I got my linux server updated the day 1.04 came out. Yesterday a bunch of folks were tring to play. At random points during the game all of a sudden everyone would get massive ping spikes!! I mean we would be running along at 225 max ping (map full of entities) and then all of a sudden BLAM!! 1K+ pings.
I mean. The game turned into the "Great Natural Selection Slide Show" for most people. Then I realised. My wife and myself were hardly affected. My linux server, my computer, and my wifes computer are all behind a firewall/router. Only the folks on the Internet side of the connection were seeing high pings.
Thank you Slammer (AKA Sapphire). Actually, thank you Microsoft SQL server for allowing such a horrible virus to knock out ATMs and create lag in my server!! I find it appropriate that I use an MS-NBC article about the virus.

*Suddenly remembers code red.*
Did anyone notice that there are very few Linux viruses out there?
I sure did...man, I love Linux! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Im with you there, but its not that it just Linux, its just that more people no windows to hack it. Its just a matter of time before Linux is targeted.
Agreed though, that is why I am running my server on linux... I am just sad the client has to be Windows. Gaming is the only reason I use a PC.
Or, dont be a dumb admin that has no power to patch his server.
- were running MS SQL (notorious for shoddy security; better alternative databases available)
- had said service visible to the whole internet (dear $deity NO)
- didn't apply the patch (sloth, ignorance, whatever. Bad admin, no cookie)
There are far too many "sysadmins" who don't have the first clue. My initial clue-test is this: when a guy brings a box into my datacenter, I give him his network config as below, then watch them configure their NIC.
IP: 123.123.123.222
Netmask: .128
gateway: .129
Most assume the netmask is "123.123.123.128". *buzz*, you have failed networking 101. These people should *not* be managing servers. People like this are often the "admins" for small businesses. These are the type of people responsible for unpatched servers.
I had to leave my biweekly D&D game early to diagnose the flood of pages hitting my phone, and the cause was three colo'd boxes with infected MS SQL services, slamming the switches and routers with worm traffic. Verbose is not a happy camper when he's forced to quit a round of D&D because of crappy admins <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->
