<div class="IPBDescription">And they contain NS data....</div> Ok. This is very strange. On my old system I noticed a few junk files in my C:\ directory, but I deleted them and ignored it.

Now, on my new system, I just noticed they are popping up again, so I decided to open one up and give it a look. To my astonishment, they contained NS binary data. Here are some excerpts:

Etc. All the junk characters you see are Binary data. this is what it looks like when it gets pasted as text.

I asked a friend who I play NS with a lot, and he has similar files with similar content. These are obviously be generated in relation to NS somehow. Either a bug in the mod, or a HL problem or something.

Does anyone have these type of files with this type of content on their system? Does anyone know of a way to get rid of them?

Follow up. This is a Windows 2000 machine, that is not used as a dedicated server, only a client. I start up "Host a game" to test stuff once in awhile, but not for any extended period of time.

The server mentioned in the first code block is the main place I play on and I am an admin there. My friend who has the files plays there sometimes, but is not an admin.

These files are usally deleted when Half-Life exits, but if HL Crashes it doesnt delete them.

If you look in the demo files(opening them in wordpad) you see the same stuff.

Very wierd what I found in mine:

    NS References of course
TFC References (so its not an NS thing)
MY MAP COMPILING STATUS (so its not even a half-life.exe thing)
and.. the binary for my map...

all strung together in one big glob...

perhaps its the WinXP scandisk way of 'fixing' things? heh

I've noticed this as well. Worse, I found the same NS-related garbage in my System.ini.
NS had frozen the last time I used my computer; when I rebooted, the C:\WINDOWS\System.ini was overwritten with junk about ns_bast and a string of trash characters. I restored the file from my backup facilites and have had no trouble since, but its still odd.

Blackout, thats a major cause for concern if it starts to overwrite your INI's, you might wanna check your settings.

I also seem to have them. They include NS, Valve Hammer, Warcraft3, and what seems to be other random data related to programs on that drive. Windows98 SE. Strange.

I think windows dumps lots of weird stuff if your computer crashes. Scandisk quite often creates strange files after an improper shutdown. I don't think its anything to do with with Half-life or Natural Selection.

I just have a list of textures (in the WAD) and sounds...

No matter, it must be some HL cache.

    they are from half-life

its not a bug of anykind theyre SUPPOSED to be created when you play or do almost anything with HL

but like voogru said theyre usually deleted when you exit

its not a problem its not a bug its just some tiny irritating files

OK, here's an interesting question. If I ran HL and didnt allow it to write to the root part of that network drive (via file system or network share permissions), would HL not work? ...or would it put the files somewhere else? ...or would it care at all?

Maybe I'll try it out and see what happens.

I fail to see how its half-life doing this when there are things related to map compiling and warcraft3 also inside these files...

Sticking a bunch of junk in your c:\ directory with random data from various applications you've been running sure sounds like a Microsoft Windows scandisk thing to me.

Probably safe to go ahead and delete them. If you shut down your computer improperly you'll see simular files showing up again.

There is no warcraft stuff in the same file as the half-life stuff. jeez, this is completely normal. Just a temporary file where half-life keeps info about the server/game you are playing. When you quit Half-Life, the file is supposed to be deleted. If Half-Life crashes, it doesn't get deleted. You can delete it and nothing bad will happen. Its not a big deal LOL.

BTW howdy PJ! I look forward to CHOMPING you on CHIMAYHEM <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Well, AFAIK HL as not crashed on this system before. At least I don't remember it crashing. As far as HL writing them there but then deleting them on exit, hasn't Valve ever heard of the Temp directory?
