cute, I'm not sure what your trying to accomplish though ...

we know you have skill, but are you just pimping your self out or do you want to start making them for people again?

Because if its the later, so should just say it and save alot of time.

If its the former .. well .. what ever, but some (Read: majority of the forums) people would consider it spam or post whoring.

Dude. Ok, you do KILLER 8bit art. You CANNOT have that 90k image as your sig. There are rules, your sig is nearly 4 times the limitation set on these boards.

I know it's hard, but you gotta bring your sig sizes down to around the 22k mark.

Look, I could do amazing animated sigs if I had a few more frames to work with. On these forums I DON'T and I have to concede to that fact and produce small sigs.

Either remove enough frames from that animation so it's around 22k or get a new sig. Sorry, but rules are rules

alright alright... well since we all can't have sigs bigger than 22k it would seem pointless to start making them for people. So no sigs for any of you
I really don't see why there is such a small limit to signature sizes anyway... hardly anyone even visits this forum, let alone have enough people that are using 56k modems to complain about someone's signature... I say if people don't complain about it the sig file size should be larger... I've been to plenty of other forums that don't enforce rules as strictly as this one, and frankly those forums are a lot more active than this one. [b]OMG could there be a correlation?!]/b]

anyway, rules are rules if you're gonna be tough about it.

I'll comply with your rules.

Want a tissue?

The rules are there to be complied with. I don't like it, other people don't like it, but you have to conform.

Dayofdefeatmod.com forums signature rules
A. Signatures
1. Use consideration for others when adding a signature. Some people still run in 800x600 resolution. Please keep the total height of your sig under 1/3 of the screen on the majorly accepted "default resolution" of 1024x768.
2. Posting "signature test" threads annoy us to a great deal. Once you alter your sig it will be changed in ALL of your previous posts. If you must post about it for comments/suggestions then do it in the correct thread in the art forum. No where else.
3. If you find something missing from your signature one day, do not just to the conclusion it was the evil forum gremlins that mysteriously edited your sig to remove that picture that made us scroll for 10 minutes. If something gets removed from your signature, it was either removed by a moderator or admin and it would be wise to not put it back in. Those found to be adding the content back on purpose will be banned.
4. Please do not post your signature in every single post you make. Once or twice per page of a thread is plenty. We wont get angry over this but it is appreciated.

Now, is it just me or did nobody find any rules here pretaining to file size... and what's this?! dodmod's forums have less members than the NS forums, but have nearly 3 times the original topics and almost over 4 times the replies?!

Repressive forums rules pinch on forums activity if I were to come to a logical conclusion about this comparison.
I'd really like to know exactly why there is such a rule on this forums, because a small animated signature that isn't big and annoying and just has a large filesize doesn't appear to bother anyone. I demand an explanation being that I normally don't take no for an answer and enjoy my right to question authority.

and how long have the DOD forums existed in comparison to the NS forums? NS is still a fairly new mod, especially in comparison to DOD

Also, we've had 2 forum re-builds. If you added the statistics of this board to the ones from the Ikonboard and the UBB, I'm sure we'd see much similar numbers.
• BotsBots Join Date: 2002-12-18 Member: 11065Members
the fact still remains that there doesn't seem to be a good reason for this rule... to me at least. Every other HL forum I'm a member of doesn't have such rules... why the sharp seperation?
• RoadMasterRoadMaster Join Date: 2002-06-01 Member: 718Members
in other words you are backing out of that argument about DOD having a more popular forum because your statistics were biased to begin with...

So why does the NS forums have to conform to the "other forums" which you personally visit? I know many forums with restrictions, and I personally believe restrictions are GOOD. I hate seeing half my screen filled up with one persons sig. I came to the msg board to read posts, not glare at sigs. Sigs should only be allowed to take up the same space as a FEW lines of text...

that's just the friggin point man!!! my sig wasn't huge!!! it was a little animated figure only about 40 pixels high and abou 58 pixels wide.. jesus christ!

Well, quite frankly, having to scroll down a third of the page to see the next post incredibly annonying. Your argument about hardly anyone coming here has failed to stand up, and unless my eyes failed me, these forums appear to have more members than those of DoD. In that case it's probably nescessary to take into account the 56k'ers amomg us.
• RoadMasterRoadMaster Join Date: 2002-06-01 Member: 718Members
yes but it still increases loading times due to file sizes and when restrictions are removed in some cases a few larger sigs turns into a lot of larger sigs and small increases in loading times for dialups turn into large loading times... and it just makes life better...
• AcrobadAcrobad Join Date: 2002-10-31 Member: 1779Members
Personally, i just don't see what's the big deal about the size limit on sigs.

I mean, it didn't occur to me to make a sig until i found an idea that matches my sig line

I mean, no offence, but really, 99% of the sigs out there are just fancy pictures without an actual meaning, is it just showing off the 1337 photoshop/paint skill or what? and 50% of the time these sigs are not even made by the owner!

So yeah, after my rant, uh, let's get back to topic, shall we...

Not all people are rich and they just can't afford anything better than 56k. I suffered 56k before and I know how much a pain it is to load a page which is 10% actual content and 90% sigs, in size. Sometimes I just wish there was an option to disable seeing sigs so I don't have to go thru those fancy pictures which I don't give a **** about.

even with the limit of the size, you can still do alot to your sig. Animated sig? what's next, a whole Matrix lobby scene in the avatar next time?

Frankly, I don't care about whatever rules other forum has. I've learned something after all these years, and that is, if you don't like a certain rule about a place, it is much wiser to just leave the place instead of arguing over that little rule, making a total **** out of yourself.

Just so you know, the Science and Industry forums, one of the first forums that I personaly ever visited don't allow you to use avatars or signatures at all. So from my point of view at least, this whole "so many other HL forums allow me to use whatever size sig I want" thing really doesn't apply.

And I agree with RoadMaster -- I hit reply just after he posted, so I didn't initially see what he posted, but I was also going to post something along the lines of "You go to a forum to read other people's thoughts, not to look at a sig image that takes up the entire screen." And although I have a good Internet connection, as well as a decently sized screen, I really appreciate these limits just to avoid the possibility that someone will abuse their right to use a signature.

I'm just saying that on other forums there isn't anyone who complains this much about signatures with large file sizes... if you can't have large file sized sigs then what the hell is the point of having signatures at all... There is an option to just turn signatures off if you just want to look at the posts anyway... at least on the other forums I go to there is... maybe that's a novel idea to add if you haven't already done it, admins.

I'll repeat it, if you don't want to look at people's signatures then turn them off!!!

meh,

I am not taking sides however I would like to know WHY the file size limit is implace. I can understand the pixle size (I don't like postst that are 1/4 the size of the sig either), however I dont see much porblem with large sigs

I am sorry I am ussed to high speed and thus don't remember, won't animated giffs load the same as normal pics, ie page loads and then images load? (so you still see the texts asap just not the large sigs)

I don't think it's fair to limit people's creative freedom and expression because of some less fortunate individuals with poor connections... if they don't want to look at signatures they can simply change some options to accomodate their poor connection. It's as simple as that, end of story.
• RoadMasterRoadMaster Join Date: 2002-06-01 Member: 718Members
I often identify people's posts by their sigs, it's quicker. Most people will notice my avatar before they notice my name for example. And no one is "limiting" you, they are just making the boards nice for everyone ELSE. You can be creative without breaking the rules of the board, heck knows others have. Perhaps you aren't as creative as you think

Perhaps you aren't as observant as you think.

if you never saw what my signatures looked like have a look..

that doesn't disprove me at all, the images still break the rules of the board due to their file sizes, as I said, perhaps you can be creative WITHOUT breaking such rules...
