Map Installers

<div class="IPBDescription">Have a custom installer for your map.</div> Hi everyone, I have been watching this thread quite closely as many of you are nearing release of your maps.

I package Day of Defeat maps and Natural Selection maps for mayberrygames.com that make the maps idiot proof to install. I have packages a few of the new NS maps that I have found here as well. While I started packaging these maps for the benefit of players who visited Mayberry that were not techincally inclined, I have realised that a nice installer gives that much more of a great first impression. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

The installers are windows based and have custom graphics and custom dialog boxes. They will detect the installed location of both Half-life and retail Counterstrike on both single login WIN 9X machines and Multi login Win2K and XP machines (there are differences) They can be zip compatible if desired without affecting the functionality for those who would rather use the installer format.

If any of you mappers are interested in having a custom installer made for your map, please feel free to drop me a line using my e-mail address at <a href='http://www.mayberrygames.com' target='_blank'>http://www.mayberrygames.com</a>. I have packaged over 150 maps for Mayberry and have not had any problems. Please check out my current installers for NS at <a href='http://www.mayberrygames.com/ns.html' target='_blank'>http://www.mayberrygames.com/ns.html</a> You can aso check my installers for DoD at <a href='http://www.mayberrygames.com/custom_maps.html' target='_blank'>http://www.mayberrygames.com/custom_maps.html</a> (the website layout will be changing soon so if the links don't work anymore, go to the main site and navigate to the downloads section)

I can provide you with all the specs you need so that you can have a customized installer that you can distribute with pride. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Whats so dificuld in copy pasting a few files into the right directories?
    Installers just make sense with map collections, but there are just 10 NS maps around.

    That is really handy, if I ever complete a map, I will be in touch with you for sure. Good work <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I was thinking of making my own installer (just for fun, I be a half-decent coder)... yo MessyTreat, would you be willing to cough up some pointers or hints? You seem to know what you're doing.

    Thx <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    There really is no mystery to installing maps into halflife mods but surprisingly, there are a huge number of people who cannot get it right wthout assistance. I have even seen ZIP files provided by mappers that got it wrong.

    The issue is not about how easy it is to copy a few files but how much easier you can make it for people who want to play your maps with a minimum of hassle.

    The choice is yours, no-body is asking you to stop distributing your maps in a format that you choose but I am providing an alternative to a zip file.

    I am a coder myself and I thought about making an installer but there are far better commercial ones out there. I am using a version Wise installer for these installer packages.

    If you can get ahold of a copy, I would be happy to provide you with a script you can modify to your liking.

    I can give you a few things to look for if you have your heart set on building your own installer.
