Using Mines

<div class="IPBDescription">instead of TF & Turrets</div> Mines are useless against Fades, as they blow all up in a single Fadeshot, but at the beginning of a Game they could be a cheap alternative against TF and Turrets IF PLACED CORRECLY AND IF THE MARINE START DOESNT HAVE MUCH ENTRANCES. Remember Skulks can get through poorly placed mines.
In a Corridor placing 3 mines like this would conseal it, or at least require a sacrifice of a skulk.

Placing turrets enables Skulks still to run in the base causing havoc.
After the first rush has been beaten off, <b>would you consider Mines a nice decoration for your Base?</b>
As an Alien i wouldnt sacrifice myself quickly, I would instead creep outside and wait...
But thats only a question I wanted you to answer.

Mines are cool, powerful and fun! I LOVE MINES!

Mines are best at vents of course, and Mines are great as Traps!
You could put mines near the TF as tripmines, so a skulk that destroys a turret which leaves the TF vulnerable cant chew on it till it respawns <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Mines are good when there is a solid defender in base, not only do mines hurt the enemy, they make an explosion to alert the defender of something that is tryin to be breached.

    Also mine IPs and the Observatory, as well as phasegates, dont want a reverse phase rush =(

    mines are very hard to use effectively and lots of people will tell you that they are useless. But remember, just like turrets and off. chambers they are only there to delay the enemy, not to hold off attacks by themselves. great places to put them as stated before are around structures. Phase gates are the best structure to put them around. For example, how many times have you been a skulk and been so excited that you took down the TF at subspace so you rush over to the phase gate to take that down but you go to far and actually go into the gate! You wouldn't know that there was a circle of mines around the gate at the other end, as soon as you stepped off you'd explode!

    Also a problem on some maps is defending the comm chair, like in ns_hera where the chair is all the way up the elevator and behind the door. Instead off putting turrets there, i usually ask for some mines and i'll put em up in the doorway and then on the floor around the chair. again this is just to delay the enemy so marines can take care of other things like capping resources and controlling hives.

    Mines just plain rule. What do they cost? Not much. With the 5 mines you can get GUARANTEED at least 2 skulks. Not bad price, eh? Besides they hesitate to come back.

    Remember: FLOOR is your friend. Consider ns_bast, the huge elevator is up and skulks run up the ladders. Put 2 mines on the ground at up where the skulks jump next from the ladder. Splat.

    The problem is that when mines are most useful, at the start of the game, the Comm is too busy doing other things. Dropping IPs, Armory, Observatory, scanning for hives, selecting a waypoint. And the marines are too busy itching to get out of the base to kill things. So nobody remembers to drop mines.

    Mines should be one of the first things dropped, IMHO.

    People should also make sure that mines are not too close to each other thus the alternating pattern for halls. Mines DO kill each other.

    Even though there are people who like mines, they forget about placing them on the ground to protect structures. Though, you should only place 2 mine packs per game, since too many mines could end up turning to nothing when a fade pops them. Though if you have 2 hives locked down, MINE AWAY!

    Nothing can replace a one good marksman on guard duty. It's sad how fast skulks go down.

    mines are way cheap and quite frankly, they arent used enough because people don't wanna take the time to set up good mined layouts. all the maps allow for the rts and ccs to be mined in a way thats hampersome for aliens but people don't look for the obvious clues to set this up. in fact commanders usually don't think about possible mine assistance when setting up a turret defense. perhaps when this game gets so easy that people have nothing better to do, they will keep it in mind.

    Whatever you do, never expect mines to deter a determined skulk. A marine team I was playing against on Tanith laid mines at both door in their spawn, and left it at that. A skulk ran though on a suicide mission, and died, taking a wall of mines with him. I followed. By the time I was killed, I'd eaten both IPs, the Obs, and the com.     Just don't place mines out of something like Metal Gear. Took a little bit of work to get through them but managed with little trouble.

    Well placed mines will at the least make a skulk stop and consider. Well placed mines combined with a single good shooter on guard duty will stop many, many skulk rushes in their tracks. Period.

    Get on the opposite side of the door as soon as they get half way to you they should be dead. One marine can easily kill 3 skulks at a safe distance , 25 lmg , 25 lmg 10 pistol, and thats being damn liberal too.

    we've already said that mines don't stop skulks. Mines are there to slow them down, and they will slow them down if placed correctly. One way a skulk avoids being shot is by jumping and running all around and never staying in one spot. If you have mines set up, the skulk can't careless run around the room. So one of to things may happen: either you have an easier time killing the skulk with an lmg, or the skulk trips a mine. Also while skulks are trying to climb on the cieling to get over the mines in a doorway, you can pick em off.

    So I repeat, mines are worthless if you dont have marines there too. Mines just compliment a defense. DO NOT lay mines and leave the base alone and think you are all set. and stop saying that mines can't stop skulks because we know that already. You are just cutting their options.

    plus your owned when the fades roll around. I'm pretty sure mines damage buildings too.

    At ns_hera put down mines on the ground in the dark passage to ur base (from ventilation).

    I distinctly remember a picture being posted in the forums with a command chair being surrounded by like 3 packs of mines, and having them detonated. The command chair was still at full health. However, I'm also pretty sure this was in casual mode. Tourney is a whole different story.

    OR your marine can die without doing any damage. Mines however.. Kill them perhaps, for sure make them think twice.

    Mines DO NOT damage buildings with FF off (casual mode). No experience with FF on, so I don't know there.

    Mines are great in the hands of an experienced player, and are a waste of 8 res points in the hands of the inexperienced.     Yeah, I've seen mines that don't blow up when being stepped on/through. Proximity and Trips... so it's not just one orientation. I presume it to be poor ping- but really I dunno.

    Mines are a necessity in most every map. And until 1.04 comes out, a necessity in most siege strats too. 1.04 nerfs the siege strats so I don't think people will be doing them much anymore.

    Mines are useful around res nodes, but the reason that most players don't do this is because they usually don't have mines to do it with. Most mines are usually planted within vicinity of where they are dropped, either because the players fear losing them before all of them have been used or they just don't want to travel across the map to plant a mine.

    The most successful mines I've planted are when the commander's dropped loads of packs, and while the other marines are placing them near the base area, I'm taking the trouble to wander as far out as possible, and place just single mines spread out on the floor. This way they are unexpected, and someone is bound to walk on them.

    Mines around CCs are pretty useful too.

    Still makes me cringe when someone spams a single doorway with mines.. what a waste!

    I always die when i got a welder. Always. If I got only my LMG I hold some time, but when I got something useful, I get wasted before I know it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
