It's a movie
I just saw this movie the other day, and I'm still stunned. I really think it was one of the best films I've seen in a long, long time. Personally, I'd recommend it to anyone. My friends though, didn't really like it. Did anyone else see it? What did you think?

Saw the trailer a few days ago. (I live in the UK it isn't out yet.)

I just have one question though, is it historically accurate?? Or is it just based on an event, or did it even happen?

It's based on real events. It covers racial gang wars between the Irish and everyone else in New York during the mid-19th century. AFAIK, the main characters really existed, but were probably 'embellished.'

Oh no. Not boring in the least. No no no. Lots of fighting, and even some boobs There's this one guy with a cross, and the cross is a sheath for this sword. And he draws the sword out of the cross, so he's got the cross/club thing in one hand and the sword in the other. Totally badarse. How could a movie with stuff like that be boring?

Didn't U2 do the music for that film (I bought their 'Best Of' album the other day and noticed 'The Hands That Built America - Theme from Gangs Of New York' on it)? Or is this just a conincidence?

I saw it last night, very long movie, about 3 1/2 hours with previews, good though, some of the best battle scenes since Braveheart. The villian in that movie was amazing well done.

Yea, Bill was amazing. And that hat of his. I wish I had a hat like that.

Interesting footnote about the movie, Scorsese waited 30 years to direct it. He said he "finally had the time and resources to do it." As for historically accurate, it is, for the most part. The character of Amsterdam isn't real, but rather represents the old "new" generation of Irish immigrants able to blend with society. William Cutting, Bill, is based on the a man of the time similar to himself, Bob, also a butcher. Bob however was killed in a bar fight with an Irishman 1 year before Bill in the movie. All the events portrayed in the movie are real, and all the gang names are real, as is the faction known as "nativists". A spectacular movie. One I'm going to go see again.

I haven't seen it myself, and I probably won't due to the fact that I only watch the few movies a year that I know I will like. I've heard really bad reviews for it, as well as a few good ones.

While the story was your basic revenge flick, the historical setting was rather accurate. From the draft riots, all the way down to the Municipal and Metropolitan cops fighting each other for authority to patrol the streets.
