External Satellite Relay In Tanith

What's it for?
I've *never* seen a marine even bother to weld the door open on the External Satellite Relay area on Tanith. Does it do anything special? If not, it seems that at the very least, it would be an intelligent place to relocate the marine base at the start of the game. It would give the marines a clear view of incoming aliens and restrict any attacks to a single entryway, much more easily defended than the original base.

Or is this area just ornamental?

IT opens up another pathway to the ... Satellite Communications hive (or Sat Com for short) for the marines.... and for the aliens...

oh that thing, yah, i usually try and siege from inside there w/o breaking the other wall.

What, like some sort of teleport? The map doesn't seem to support any passageway there. Does "relay" imply something like a phase gate?

Uplink Command is where Marines spawn. It's got those two windy passages that Fades love to bombard you with.

To the right (standing on the cc, looking out), the passage takes you past a big satellite dish, which winds around and heads towards Satellite Communcations Hive. There's a weldable door right there.

i was thinking of that satalite dish that you weld outside of the map that shoots a laser beam near the sat comm hive

    kinda thinking the wrong thing

It is that big dish. I've never seen it used for anything at all.

    This might fail... trying...

yep..its that thing where you weld it and it shoots a laser beam and opens up a entrance to the sat com hive

Welding the External Satellite Relay blows open (or should...I've heard it can fail on occasion) a tunnel past the existing door in that same "outdoor" area. And from there there's a small hallway that leads up to SatCom, with a breakable wall at the end.

Yah its failed twice on me...Damn that! Cost me the game one time, we could have gotten the their 2nd hive and ended the fades but nooo....

So a satellite relay shoots a laser that can blow up walls.

    I see...

really helpful after they just filled up the other area outside the hive, and you blow up a wall and walk around.

actually, if it fails, just open fire on the wall, it falls

Just to clarify, I don't think the satellite DISH actually shoots the lasers, it just calls in support from orbital satellites.

If they had orbital satellites, why didn't they just blow the whole place up in the first place? Not like one extremely large hole in the grounds is going to affect anything... the map might disappear along with the marines but... you always have the ready room .

I say we take off, nuke the site from orbit.

It's the only way to be sure.

If you weld the console open, it activates an attack sat or something and blows a hole into the wall (Good place to siege but watch for skulk ownage)
  • SirusSirus Join Date: 2002-11-13 Member: 8466Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
actually it connects a wire thats broken when u weld.
  • LarofeticusLarofeticus Join Date: 2002-10-30 Member: 1764Members
now if you could only give waypoints in the area to tell someone to go there and weld it...

Do structures and players get injured near the blast area?
  • TydusTydus Join Date: 2002-11-13 Member: 8508Members
can u acutally go in that area where the red beam blocks? It could make a REALLY good base

With enough lag you can do *Anything*[I]

No, players definitely don't. I haven't tested structures, but would guess the same.

Correct. If you weld long enough, the satelite dish will fire several laser bolts at the far wall, thus opening an alternate route to Sat Com. Sometimes when you stop welding before all bolts are fired, the last wall will remain up. This wall is actually "down". All you have to do is weld it, and it'll drop. Some teams prefer to not destroy the furthest wall, as they can siege from the small area that's opened, without being directly exposed to attacks from Sat Com. Cheers!

Just remember that wall can be breached from either side, so your siege cannons could be in for a nasty surprise if the aliens catch on and break down the wall to hit your little outpost.

ive had it fail on me once, but was able to break the wall...

me thinks the laser makes it so the walls are breakable afterwards.

anyone know if you can die from the laser?
