they kind of work for me, at least the part of the page that says click here to download, but at the risk of sounding ignorant what is a *.dem file??

Um... a HL demo file. Haven't seen them (as I haven't tried to download them yet, probbably will once I get home).
Basically, put them in the right folder and use the console command "playdemo XXXX" to run the relevant demo.
