I have found it is a good idea to send a marine to each empty hive right off the start of the game (provided u are in a large game, around 8 each team). Very often they will encounter a gorge walking up undefended, and killing him will slow down the alien progression immensly early in the game. Make sure they are smart enough to stand at one end of the room. It is very tricky for a skulk to assault a marine doing this, I can hold a hive like this for a good 5-10 minutes against several skulks, provided the comm drops me health and ammo once in a while.

I still stay sticking with a teammate is better.

While you may be OK with the commander dropping you the occasional health/ammo, he can't watch guys in different hives. Keep in mind that scanner sweeps do essentially the same thing, while freeing up a marine for use elsewhere!

I think the point is more to catch a gorge by himself, not so much scouting the enemy hives.

In a game earlier today one of my troopers went off to a hive by himself. We were skulk rushed (as usual) and somehow they managed to kill everyone and get the infantry portal. I had just enough res points to plop down a CC near this guy at the hive, and as I died he hopped in and built our base back up. Went from certain death to having a fighting chance. We lost in the end (my bad comm'ing skills ) but we ended up at least getting the chance to win. *shrug*

Seeing that not many gorges ask for escort when they go to build the hive on pub servers. It is possible to ask a marine to hide in one of the empty hives and kill the gorge that comes in to build the hive. It hurts quite a bit especially if he has been saving for the hive already.

Make sure to knife the tower if you get the chance. That *REALLY* sets 'em back.

    Definitely

Me and a teammate had made our way into a hive in one game, and the commander said there was a Gorge hiding out in there (scanner sweep is great ), so he gave us a waypoint to him and we took him out.

I think of Gorges as mobile hives now - you can set the aliens back massively if you take out a Gorge that has over 33 resources.
