Messed Up Graphics

purple half-screen?
Ok, I had NS set up to use software acceleration at 800x600 and it's worked happily since release. Today I go to play, and it says "OpenGL not supported by your graphics card". Huh? I go check my video settings, someone's changed to OpenGL at 800x600. I switch it back to software, and go to join my server. The console comes up, but it is squished horizontally on the left half, and is purple... I've tried other modes and settings but I can't get anything supported by my GeForce 4 or that isn't all purple and squishy!
Somebody help! I gotta get back to my action

Perhaps you shouldn't try to run in software mode. I'm positive someone will come along to explain further, but here's the gist of it: when you have a geforce4 and ever have to run in software mode, it's time to question reality and become a hermit in Southeast Asia.

    GeForce 4 _what_? MX? 4200/4400/4600?

Even with an MX, you should be able to do better than 800x600. Run OpenGL or DirectX mode, and bump your resolution up. Make sure you don't have Anti-Aliasing or Anisotropic filtering forced "On" in your advanced video properties; only experiment with them after you have a stable game going. Do you have any problems with other games that use DirectX or OpenGL?

It's probable that you have a driver problem. Try reinstalling DirectX and the drivers for your video card. If you're still stuck, try installing a different revision of your video card drivers.

Yeah, that's the problem. The default MS drivers under XP don't support OpenGL - I've seen that message before.
