Killing Reaper Leviathans

So far every time I "kill" a Reaper Leviathan it swims away into the terrain never to be seen or heard of again. I've done that to 4 different Reaper Leviathans around the Aurora. Where do they go? Do they despawn? Are they still alive and refuse to fight me? If you do actually kill them (reduce their HP to zero) do they freeze or have a death animation?

So many questions! AHHHH!

It is possible to kill them, they just flip over and float to the surface. Made me feel quite sad for some reason.

The few I've had to kill did the "twitch, roll over and play dead" thing, like you forgot to change the water in the fish bowl. They aren't guarding anything I really want to look at, so I don't come across them much.
