All key presses causing frame rate to drop to 0 for 3-5 seconds

As described in the title, any key press is causing the games fps to drop to 0 for seconds at a time, this includes the title screen. Changing graphic settings make no difference.
When in game, moving the mouse and viewing the environment works fine, rolling with 144 fps on minimum. Can climb in and out of the life pod fine, the animations do not slow the fps at all. Only when a keyboard key is pressed does the symptoms occur.
As you can imagine this makes the game unplayable.
i7-3770k CPU @ 3.5GHz.
16GB RAM.
Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 2GB.
Any suggestions?
