I thought something that would be nice for subnautica would be variation like the cave dwelling jellyrays be different to the mushroom forest jellyrays, i know this has probably already been suggested but that's not all i have to say, Something that came to my mind was a database object, A sort of tablet like object that you could point at creatures and it would register them to the database say you point it at a Reaper Leviathan and it will be scanned and you will have data on it something like,
Species:Reaper Leviathan
Diet:Carnivorous
Attitude:Extremely hostile
Category:Fauna
Length:however long it is
Edible:???
The Reaper Leviathan is a large predatory creature of the Fauna category it is extremely hostile to other life forms including humans, the four red appendages on its head can be used to grab objects such as a seamoth, it has been observed killing Reefbacks etc.
I also thought another good base object would be fish tanks that you could keep small fish in, peepers, holefish, hoverfish, spadefish etc.
I don't know if the developers look at this but i hope they do...

EDIT: The database should update through DNA research, not scanning. DNA extracting mechanics are coming to the game.
