Objectives of reason of the game once it's released

Ok I'm the new guy here and as far as i know I crashed in a water planet and can explore but were there ever objectives involved for the future? As in a story or something you have to do or is it just survive and explore. I know it's a sandbox game but even those have some objectives and things to fulfill besides surviving and exploring.

Any of the old backers want to shed a light here?

There will probably be story elements-- whether or not that's a large overarching story or small activities to do that flesh a larger picture out is not quite clear... And is still in debate by us "old backers", and I'm sure, the devs :P
