Steam dependence

Hi,

This night steam has been offline 5 minutes.
I could start NS2 with steam offlined, but no server showed up making the game unplayable.

Making the game dependent of Steam servers state is quite dangerous imho, especially for online games.

I'm pretty sure you can show servers without steam connection.
Like we did for other games before ;-)

I believe if you join manually via the ip in console you can still connect to the server (don't quote me on this)

    connect x.x.x.x

@pSylle though I agree with you on this, think also of the benefits gained from using steam servers. Joining a server a friend is on from both in game and out and other benefits as well. These minor annoyances observed from steam being offline are few and far between so the issue isn't very big on the list of things.

@Side1Bu2Rnz9 ofc I don't question the benefits from Steam.
I was wondering: in the case steam servers are down, the show should go on :)

NS2 servers have the ability to disable VAC and play in LAN mode, but I think the game client still attempts to authenticate users.
