DEV's Please Look At This and Let Me Know What's Wrong
Hi I've been experiencing issues in Natural Selection 2. I get 160 FPS in the graphics menu of the game. I am forced to run at 1024 x 768 or else the game is unplayable. My native resolution is 1920 x 1080. In game I get anywhere from 30 - 50 fps. In the ready room 145-165 FPS. If I'm around a lot of creep or a battle taking place my FPS plummets and it immediately feels like I'm wading through quicksand. This is the only game that does this for me. I realize my computer specifications aren't top of the line but in my opinion they far surpass what's needed to run this game properly.

The menu and ready room is no place to determine actual FPS, just fyi, everyone gets high fps there obviously :)
Your specs are amazing and should be able to handle things just fine, just fyi, so something is wrong it looks like..
I submitted your plog to our internal collection for the devs to look at.

In the meantime, are you disabling performance hungry things like ambient occlusion?
Are you running with vsync off? (you should)
Are the settings in your catalyst control panel set to "application controlled"?
Are you using fullscreen mode?

Thanks for getting back so quickly.

I am running everything on the absolute lowest setting possible. Everything is "Off" or set to "Low". VSYNC is off as I never use it for any game. My CCC have all options set to performance and everything that is able to be application controlled is set to "Application Controlled". I am using Fullscreen 1024 x 768 because if I run it in my native resolution of 1920 x 1080 my FPS wont go above 35.

Edit: I also did everything in the trouble shooting and performance sticky you have posted. Still to no avail. http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...howtopic=122598

Hi, this has worked for someone with AMD CPU, could you give it a try:

Start NS2 with high priority - source
Open notepath, put in below line:
Start /high NS2.exe
Save it as "NS2.bat" next to the NS2.exe file in your steam folder, default location: C:\program files x86\Steam\<accountname>\common files\Natural Selection 2\
Make sure Steam is running and then run the NS2.bat file.

Try turning texture streaming to ON and play a game. Don't pay as much attention to the FPS number so much as how the game actually feels . I noticed with that setting on, I did not encounter such horrible lag during fights. My FPS does not seem to be that much higher on average but the gameplay is definitely smoother. And my CPU is not as fast I only have a 1.8ghz phenom x4 OCd to 2ghz. 8gb pc6400 and a radeon HD 6850 1gb GPU. I get 90-110 fps in the ready room and 20-40 during gameplay (depending on how much is going on) . But turning texture steaming ON reduced the sudden 'lag surges' or 'pauses' in the action in between frames.

Also, just to test it.. try removing your GPU and CPU overclocks momentarily.. its worth a shot just to see.

THIS! Worked for me!

Just so you know, CPU Benchmark gives your CPU a rating of 3359. I have the AMD Phenom II OC 3.6GHZ which gets 4,066 and I still have framerate. I always play at 1920x1080 though. When you play at in 1080 do you get a higher rise in "waiting for GPU" when you look at R_stats? Unlikely so you should be able to play this at 1080 no problem with your card.

I have done this already and while it provided a minor increase on some maps, on others it is still very jittery.

I thought the same thing. I had lowered everything back to defaults and reset bios back to "Optimized Defaults". Made sure everything was running on stock. Turned off AMD Overdrive. Loaded up NS2 and I took a 15-20 FPS hit. Any word on the logs I provided you with?

I'm confused lol. My native res is also 1920 x 1080. But I am forced to play on 1024 x768 or else the game is unplayable for me. Even with all the workarounds posted in the forums.

ironhorse I noticed your post about recording demos to help the dev's acquire more information. Would it be beneficial if I recorded a demo and posted it on this thread?

Ive experienced this before as well... well all the time. Not in beta, nor in 225, but the launch builds have been horrid with lag (red plug of doom, lag spikes). never had this before until something changed in retail 1.0 netcode.

No your plog is enough. Demos are just good for catching bugs.

You tried that high priority thing, right?

At this point I'd attempt other video card drivers and catalyst settings.. Honestly at a loss if you tried everything already..

Have you monitored temperatures yet? Download speedfan or some fee equivalent
Then stress test your rig with something like prime 95 and watch your cpu and gpu temps, and possibly their clock speed to ensure they arent down clocking when under load (with free app cpu-z

Yes I use cpu-z and CPUID Hardware Monitor. My CPU never goes above 38C even on a full load. My video card gets around 75C on a full load. But recently it's been idling at around 57C and hitting 65C under full load. I also think my type of card just runs hot but I don't know. And as far as the high priority thing I have done that and everything else listed in the troubleshooting threads. Including installed the directx in redist, deleting shaders and "%appdata%/roaming/ns2" then verifying files. All of my drivers are currently up to date and I am using the Catalyst 12.11 beta drivers because when I was using the 12.10 release it seemed worse.

P.S. Is there any chance I'll get to see the conclusion of what my logs provided?
