Game is ridiculously sluggish

NS1 vet frustrated with NS2
Hey everyone.
So I pre-ordered NS2 wayyyy back when it was first available. Years ago. 4 or 5 probably. I've been on and off following the development of NS2, and still play NS1 here and there. Used to play loads of NS1, but been on other games lately.
Anyway, NS2 is ages into its development, and it still runs like poop on my computer. I have a pretty solid PC, tried all sorts of resolution and graphics settings. Even on low settings on low resolution, the game just feels incredibly sluggish.
Low framerate, buggy as hell hitboxes, random performance drops, delayed hit recognition, etc etc. I feel like I can't hit anything. Combat is reasonable and more or less OK if it's just me and one bad guy in a room, but late game battles with numerous players and abilities going off and my framerate drops to like 5-6 FPS. At that point I become pretty much useless to the team and inevitably get frustrated and just go back and load up NS1.
I check in on NS2 roughly once a month or ever other month. When the beta first came out, it was awful. The game is massively improved since then. Sooooo much better than it used to be. Amazing improvement, but still very sluggish. I used to get 10 or so FPS just sitting in ready room. Now my game is fairly solid until I need to actually shoot something. Early on the general consensus was that this was "beta lag" or something, and that it would get better. It's been like two years now, and I'm still really struggling with game lag or whatever you want to call it.
Is this something everyone struggles with? Is there some compatibility issue with certain aspects of my PC? Is it going to keep on improving? Is there anything I can do to increase my game performance? Anything obvious in the dxdiag results that can be corrected or improved? My comp runs other modern games on high settings pretty well, but NS2 even on low res and low settings still just bogs down the moment anything exciting happens.
I've been a huge NS fan since the original release, and I have very high hopes for this game. Is there anything I can do to improve my NS2 experience? All help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks!

Things you can do is keep an eye on server tick rate, which should be between 20-30. You can check this by typing net_stats in the console. You can check your FPS with r_stats in the console. And then there is of course the stuff in this sticky you could try: Bad performance? Some hints and tips, A single topic for this.
The thing is, that if the server is not powerful enough and goes into the 10-20 tickrate range (there are a few that go to 3-10 ticks even), your PC has to do a lot more prediction. The same holds true for higher latency, so it is best to try and find a low ping server with ~25+ticks
Hope this helps you out at least some, I for one have to cope with 15-20FPS in combat and maybe 20-30 normally on my old 2008 C2D 3.4Ghz
The following servers are known to be quite powerful: #156, All-In, Archaea, exertus, OldAssGamers, Heidis Ziegenfarm, playing on these (closest to your location) would give you the least amount of troubles. Perhaps missed a few though :P
Currently (Build 215) I'm actually pretty excited with the performance I'm seeing on good servers, at least until late game.
My system is pretty crap compared to today's standards:
Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad (stock 2.4ghz) oc'ed to 3 ghz
4gb RAM
Geforce GTX 550 Ti 1GB
That's a far-cry from the 4.5+ ghz "requirement" I'm seeing everyone recommend. I consistently get 45+ fps on High (shadows/atmospherics/bloom off though) until onii and ARCs are rushing the bases 4 at a shot.
The one complaint I do have (and maybe there's a fix for this) is: when I join a new game/map that I haven't previously played on for that session, it will lag/hitch for 2 or 3 seconds when I enter a new area. I assume this is because it's loading new textures/assets/whatever into memory during that hitch. Is there any way around this? Some precaching option or something? I'd gladly wait another 30 seconds on the load screen to not have to experience this hitching for my first go-round of every map.
Anyway, just figured I'd throw in my own opinions to the growing pool, and thanks in advance to anyone that can help with my question.

Interesting FPS with that rig, perhaps my video card is indeed not powerful enough :P
There is something in the works to alleviate the loading of new area hitching of which I'v seen some improvements on my HD4850 512Mb and 2Gb DDR2

Good to hear on the improvement front! Another thing I found interesting is that I just replaced my old graphics card with this 550 Ti because it seemed capable and cheap (and because the only thing my other one would do is display pretty patterns onscreen after booting one fateful day :P). The old one was an 8800 GTS 512, and it actually performed very similarly to the Ti. The Ti is better once things get more hectic, and I had to play on Medium with the 512, but it's not really night and day performance.
Again, just speculation. Thanks for the reply Kouji San.
The end result is its "beta" so don't expect polish... which is bull really because you can't test it properly because when you add FPS+HITREG+######E SERVERS you get an experience that doesn't really reflect the game.
EG Shotgun is weak against lerk
But if i was riding at 60+fps the entire time, with real hitreg I'm pretty sure that getting some fantastic shots off on a lerk would be pretty easy with some skill.
BUT ITS BETA... or some thing... peace and <3 just speaking my mind.
I know it's beta, but I've been checking in on a regular basis and ever after several years my game just feels so sluggish and unresponsive. A friend of mine just started playing a few days ago and we have very similar PCs, and he's running it so much better than I am. I was curious if there's any specific hardware I have that has known compatibility issues.
I'll take a look at the tips in the sticky thread though, thanks!
Word of warning...
I have latest ivy brdige 3rd gen i7-3770K OC'd from 3.5ghz to 4.4ghz and I get 70-80fps early-midgame, then 30-40fps late game. ATM nothing will run this game from start-finish consistently. I don't think there is a faster CPU then that unless your talking the CPU's from Intel that are over 1000 each
Wtf, is this true??? Someone needs to post what guns are good against which aliens!! What kills the Lerk?? The flamethrower? If so, it's hard enough when you can't afford Flamethrowers too.
I liked NS1 when your comm tried to balance out who gets which weapons because having a certain weapon decides which class you're in and what you need to do. In NS2 everyone gets the flamer/GL because they're the most expensive weapons hahahahaha we'll see. I realize this game will only work in private servers where players can organize. Too much can go wrong if you don't.

Too much can go wrong if you don't.

I actually find the sg to be the best weapon against the lerks (you just need to catch them either entering or exiting a room). Though, I am nostalgic for the pistol doing heavy damage instead of normal, as that used to be the goto weapon for killing lerks at range.
Is it feasible to assume that the engine receives that miracle performance boost, or is that sluggish feel intended?
I'm not sure when NS2 will be released, but it should have been a priority long ago to make the game run more smoothly. While I've read about countless changes in that regard, the game still feels as if it's meant to be played with a controller. =P
Best tactic to taking down a Lerk is to surprise it around corners. When it goes in to do it's fartbombing run and tries to fly out of the room again. Don't fire your weapons when it is in the room farting all over the place, chances are you're low on clip ammo when it leaves and havent really made a dent in its HP pool. Just move to an exit with a shotty and wait for it, hopefully it has taken enough damage from the sentries (if you have them) and the other marines to be one-shotted when trying to leave.
The same goes for Fade imho, just block the exit so he bumps into you and shotgun it to the face, chances are you can kill it or do enough damage so the other marines can rifle/pistol it when it is trying to leave.
The things is, burst damage is hard to respond to compared to a steady damage stream (rifle/pistol), if the shotty does its job correctly, with all pellets hitting it is indeed a beast. The shotty crosshair needs work though to indicate how effective your shot actually was instead of just having one hit icon that even pops up with just 10% damage done, confusing AND misleading stuff...
LowFPS and Hitreg are still a deciding factor in this though :(
