While we're on the subject of materials - is there any chance of getting some parallax occlusion mapping on some of the surfaces in NS2. Perhaps the rock textures and the infestation textures would benefit from it.

Just saying, but a slower version of the crawling walls from the vid could fit well with the shade's distortion effect. Probably not the simple straight crawl, maybe more of a wavy circular/elliptical motion. IMO, apply it to "alien" textures like the DI and structures.
Perhaps the best way it could fit is if the Shade cloak only cloaks structures, cysts and players. Leave the DI visible, but distort the DI as mentioned above. Yea its a dead giveaway that a shade is near... but that information doesn't stay secret long anyway because of cyst chains, scans, and other things (Unlike NS1 sensory towers that could be anywhere). I think it would give marines a nice chill to know that there is an active shade.... somewhere, and perhaps a few defenders too.
May be better to run the effect regardless of whether shade is cloaked or not, don't want to make it to easy for commanders to figure if a scan is needed or not.
