<div class="IPBDescription">Inspired by true events.</div>We were pushing hard, smoke wafting from the barrel of my LMG. My squad had been fighting for control of resources. It was a war of attrition, but for every one of ours we took at least two of theirs. On the far side of the facility, Charlie squad had taken somewhere called Crevice. Our commander opened up a comm channel.

"Get ready to be beaconed!".

I grimaced, being torn down to atoms and reassembled at the speed of light was a feeling that I could never get used to.

"Aww damn, just lost my appetite."

"Can it marine! Grab shotguns and Grenade Launchers from the armory. Then get your ass through the phase gate. Charlie has got a gate up in Crevice. We are hitting the hive in Atrium!"

My helmet's warning system began its siren call. I closed my eyes.

-

The light was so bright, the taste of metal in my mouth. I felt like Drill Sergeant Biff had beaten the crap out of me in training on Eurandus 4 again. My eyes adjusted, I was back in Data Core.

"Move it marines!"

No time for fond memories. I grabbed a GL and sprinted towards the gate. Charlie was back too. Stevens was missing. Their faces told the story. No matter. With my squad and Charlie that brought us to seven. Seven TSA Marines armed to the teeth, this hive was dead already. I was third through the phase gate.

When I phased, the first thing I saw where the bodies of those who had gone before me. It was also the last thing I saw. The last thing I felt was quite different. It was a skulk's teeth in the back of my neck.

-The end

I hope you enjoyed it!

The things I do to avoid doing real work.

More details
-From the third person death cam-
After I was dead I got to see the 4 skulks that were chewing up the PG. Unfortunately nobody managed to warn the team quickly enough and all seven of us were dead within seconds! I can't quite remember the outcome of that game, but I don't think we ever recovered from that and the aliens pushed us off the map.

My inspiration to write this came from the following thread (removed hyperlink, I suck at hyperlinks)

Its got a few good stories, check it out. Add some of your own.

Considering the ending and the readers perspective, i assume you are a ghost? :)

Has potential though. Write a good script and make a movie out of it in the spark cinematic editor.

Yea, I suppose I'm a ghost. I'm an engineer, not a writer. I wanted to tell it like I saw it because, well, that's the only perspective I had!

File this under "Ghosts of the Ready Room"

Maybe I should go edit out all the "I"'s and "insert generic marine grunt name here."

Perhaps Marty McFly would be a good choice.

Gonna re-cut this to third person sometime tomorrow. Anyone know if NS2 has anywhere to support fan fiction?

I dont like that way he's telling the story even when he died.

I always imagined ns to be like marines being send from earth to a space environment (hence the ip's) after an experiment in space had gone horribly wrong, kinda similar to the halflife 1 story.
