Is this normal?

<div class="IPBDescription">Please help!</div>Hey guys,

Seems like ages since I created a new thread.

I probably wouldn't have started a new thread but ever since 188 and 189 came out, I can no longer play the game and I need your help. I frickin' love NS2 and I need my fix. :)

I am not sure if I need to re-install the game or what, but I am getting really low frame-rates after the last two beta releases.

I am running the latest Nvidia Drivers. I have an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (8M Cache, 2.40 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) processor and a Nvidia Geforce 560 GTX video card. Oh, as well as 8GB of RAM.

The thing that confuses me the most is that I can run Battlefield 3 on 1920x1200 with all settings on High and no problem with framerate, so I am thinking that it might not be the hardware but maybe a setting I need to change within NS2.

I have also tried disabling AA and atmospherics but no real speed difference. Oh, I have also tried playing NS2 on 640x480 resolution at low detail with no change in frame-rate.

Help!

    Greetings Daphisto,

Have you tried disabling any plugins you might have?

If this fails, i would give that re-install a go.

    Cheers,

I don't believe I have added any extra plugins, so I will fire up the re-install and letcha know how it goes.

Don't worry about it as you're not the only one having these issues since 188 and 189 :)

2.4Ghz and your getting around around 20-35FPS? Ifso, that should be about right for build188/189 with that CPU. Graphics settings have close to no influence, the game is server bound (you need a good server) and CPU bound, you need at least a C2D or Quad above 2.0Ghz to get FPS above 20. Towards endgame my FPS tends to go down :(

I typically see 23 FPS during non-action moments in the game and then it drops down to 15-18 FPS when in combat or running around with a bunch of fellow marines.

Ok, so I did the re-install and I hopped onto a server. I gotta say, I did seem to notice a bit of an increase in frame-rate. I'm not sure if it was just a better server I was playing on (it was one of the inversion servers), but I was getting about 23 FPS in combat and around 30 in regular areas, which is a nice increase.

So for the most part, the game is a lot more playable now thanks to the re-install. But like I said, it might have just been the server, so I will report back when I play more.

A sure fire way to see if the server is in trouble is to use the net_stats command in the console

This will show you the server tickrate, if it below 25 or lower (30 is good/max capped), your computer has to do more predictions and in effect will lower your FPS the lower the tick rate goes. Inversion is a powerful beast though :)

It's server issues. I've done benchmarks and I get about the same FPS in empty servers in 189 vs 187. But the servers in 189 perform much worse for some reason, and your client FPS is affected by it. I get only 30 FPS in 189 in the same situations where I would get 70 FPS in 187. So you aren't the only one, and it's not your hardware.
