Number of servers and gamers

blinblin Join Date: 2011-07-20 Member: 111290Members
When I usually in the game, I only see like two servers with people playing on it. Around 28 gamers at the time.

So if those two servers are full I had to wait. Sometimes a very long time, cause it is not TF2 and ppl dont usually leave the game.

So, how many active players are there? How many active servers around the world?

I usually play in the late evening - 21:30-23:30 Beijing standard time, which is GMT+8.

When do people usually play? What time is the peak of players?

Peak for NA is usually 9p-12a central.

Not sure about the other servers, I use this tool to gauge which ones are populated and in which countries (click on the orange text to the right of "developer tracker")

90% of the servers can't run a decent game at anything more than 5v5 (let alone with structures), those that can get played :>

For US players, I recommend either the Anagram or the Team #156 servers, both of which are i5 powerhouses that can handle anything. Lag is very rare on these servers.

I've noticed this as well, and its quite a shame. Granted, a lot of people who bought this game pre-ordered quite some time ago (myself included). While ostensibly they knew they bought it under the pretense of playing an unfinished project and you'd think people would be able to put up with some stuff given that, I have a feeling people just didn't find the game worth playing because performance was utterly terrible for a long time. Recently (say the last month or two) the game has become actually viable to play "just for the fun of it" but I suspect lots of people just don't have the game on their radar anymore, even if they did already shell out the cash for it. Maybe some kind of blast e-mail like "hey, lots of new awesome stuff!" to people who bought the game would help.

For better or worse, the horrible performance of the ns2 beta release put off a lot of players. It took at least 3 months in beta before the game performance got to playable levels; and by that time most gamers had left.

It will take another public status change, such as going from closed-beta to open-beta for there to be a significant number of players getting back into ns2.

You can't expect people to spend their personal money to host quality servers for a game that's not finished.

Pretty sure tempest owns the anagram Chicago servers, there are 3 of them and they run great. The #156 servers are pretty good too.

The anagram servers are actually just one. NS2 only uses one core at a time, so multiple servers can run on the same machine, provided it has enough RAM. It's handled 3 full servers and still no lag. I suggest #156 does something similar.

I still see the tickrate drop below 15 regularly on these as well towards end-game, and honestly we can't really say if there's a better server seeing as there is almost 50 and only 3 get played..

Some of the recent bugs/exploits in B181/182 have been causing serious server issues that can drop the tickrate into single digit territory.
