Croach is an awesome name for it, but there have been some other fantastic suggestions in this thread
+1 for Smeg (credit to Soylent_green) +1 for Crunk (credit to RobB) +1 for Taint (credit to NEX9)
No matter what, I agree with UW that "infestation" needs to be changed and I hope they listen to the community and pick one of these excellent suggestions. Or just stick with their choice of Croach because that's right up there with the best of them.

There's just something very alien about the spongy substance found inside animal bones? Or have you never heard that word before? I think what really sounds alien is Croach, because it isn't a word, but it is reminiscent of "cockroach" which brings to mind the insectile xenomorphs from the Alien series (whose hive structures are clearly the main influence for the Croach feature in NS2).

but I do agree that Strain is an OK suggestion. It sounds like a medical term, like a "Strain" of virus, which fits with what the Croach is supposed to be like fictitiously.
If the devs absolutely want to throw Infestation out of the window, my vote goes to Strain. But only if Infestation is impossible. ""The strain" is outside of base." Must admit it works, while not being as powerfull as "The Infestation"

"DI" is a gameplay feature, not a name that is intended to fit into the fiction of the game, it just means that instead of Croach being something mappers put in, Croach is used offensively/defensively by the alien team.
Marines would probably just call the DI "The Suck" but it doesn't work for alien side lol.
-edit:
I think just keep the name Dynamic Infestation and let the players be the clever ones. A shortened name will spring up fast and be a lot more accepted.
It's not up to UWE in the end really. The players will develop their own communication and naming for things. I guarantee you competitive players won't move to anything suggested in this thread so far, infestation will stay, regardless of its "official name".

It's not up to UW to decide what players decide to call croach, but it's 100% up to UW to decide what croach is called in text in the game. Whether players decide to ignore what UW calls croach is totally irrelevant, but I have a feeling most of them won't. Because if everyone makes up their own little name for croach, nobody will be able to communicate about croach effectively. You can call it snozberries if you want, who cares? The question is what should croach be called in the fiction of the game.
Most people who say it doesn't sound right, you must realize that is because you have already heard infestation. If they named it croach off the bad, people would be complaining about infestation. Think of Starcraft, try and think as if you just heard the word creep. If you're able to think of it as if you weren't already used to it, croach is a similar word in form. And look, creep sounds like a great name now for the 'creep' in starcraft.
Croach sounds good to me, but continue to give more suggestions, I'm sure there are a lot of good alternatives out there. Although, try and be creative instead of just saying, "Noooo leave it", because I'm sure they probably really want to change it if they bothered to look into it like this. I agree that it should be changed. Also, if the name does get changed, continue to call it infestation if you like, people have their own names for in-game things all the time. But don't be closed-minded when it comes to changing what you call something, this early on.
As far as, "being used to infestation already" as an argument against the change.... The game hasn't even been released yet, this is the perfect time to do stuff like this. How long we've been using that name compared to the total life of the game, is very small.
Main Entry: blood Part of Speech: noun Definition: red body fluid Synonyms: claret, clot, cruor, gore, hemoglobin, juice, plasma, sanguine fluid, vital fluid
Main Entry: flesh Part of Speech: noun Definition: body tissue, skin Synonyms: beef, brawn, cells, corpuscles, fat, fatness, flesh and blood, food, meat, muscle, plasm, plasma, protoplasm, sinews, thews, weight
?
To draw on the idea that the Kharaa are a single entity, a single "body".
The fact is: "This room is infested." sounds much more powerful and way cooler then "this room is croached." Or "This room is covered in croach."
edit: Another thing i would like to add: If a marine yells over his michrophone "INFESTATION HERE!" it has more chance of being understood in the heat of battle. If you compare it with yelling: "CROACH HERE!" It can easy be understood since it's only one syllable and when there are less syllables that you're ears are trying to decode, there's more room for error.

Croach is great, kudos to UW for coming up with that, very creative.
Did someone already suggest "Slurm" in this thread? That is another very good suggestion.
I like DI for text and Infestation for chat, at least officially. However, I don't know about you guys, but if I'm trying to relay information in the middle of a heavy assault, I'm more likely than not going to just say "They're spreading alien ###### in here".
I mean, really, it doesn't get more simple than that.

I'd forever be thinking of slugs pooping slurm drink in to cans, like in futurama.
+1 for just keeping it on infestation. Of course it's up to UWE but "croach" feels really forced even if it makes sense technically. Being unique can be good but not if it doesn't work well. As someone else commented, DI is a great abbreviation and saying "infested" is only about a million times more intuitive than "croached". Hell I can barely type it. :p
Not a fan of croach, doesn't feel right thematically. AKA the name would probably come from some dirty-minded soldiers. But since UWE can't really be dirty, I would think that the name would be one or more of: * humorous * suggestive, but not explicitly dirty * simple
Thematically, I'm going to vote for taint. Obviously a dirty reference, but innocence can be plead. I did a stint in the Navy, and that was a common name bestowed upon anything found wanting.
Alternately, if you want to honor the Aliens heritage, call it resin.

I think the reason it doesn't sound right is because it feels as though there is probably a disturbing Brazilian fetish porno called "2 girls, 1 croach".

edit - I also like "GURGE" as an alternative but that may be too similar to GORGE and could confuse people.
edit 2 - Not saying my choice is better than Croach, Taint or Smeg, I like those too, thats just a little brainstorming to help out UW
as in Smegma, a secretion of mammalian genitals!
How about Strain as in 'I strain when i poop'

Infestation may be a long word (...) but ingame it will be abbreviated with "infest"/"infested" which is perfectly fine.
* humorous
* suggestive, but not explicitly dirty
* simple

or how about:
Kharrupt.
Changing the name now feels... Arbitrary.
What should we do with the name for DI?
1: keep Infestation
2: Look for another name (with Croach as first option)
I vote option 1
Nice.
I think the reason it doesn't sound right is because it feels as though there is probably a disturbing Brazilian fetish porno called "2 girls, 1 croach".
