Compatible With Counter-strike Retail?

I played NS for the first time at a LAN cafe today, and I was pretty impressed. However, I do not own the retail version of Half-Life -- rather I own the retail version of Counter-Strike. Is NS compatible with this (like Day of Defeat is), or will I have to acquire a copy of Half-Life?

Also, is there a manual somewhere for NS? I couldn't seem to find anything on this website.
