Alien structures look out of place

I've looked at the screenshots and videos and to me the alien structures look weird. They're so bright, glowy and...harmless looking! The hydra looks like an exotic fruit tree and the resource structure is a big juicy orange. NS1 structures looked gross - just how they should be :D

Are the devs planning (once all the important gameplay stuff is done of course) to add more effects so the structures fit in their environment more? What happened to the cool infestation effect that was shown ages ago?

DI (that dynamic organic thingy they demoed way back when) is scheduled to make it into the final release.

    That's kind of the idea.

The alien structures are supposed to look like part of an alien ecosystem, the dynamic infestation and structures combined are supposed to xenoform the levels, so if you enter an alien controlled area, it should look almost like another planet, with its own trees and lifeforms.

So you can probably expect the walls covered in a semi-fungal growth, the lighting to be dim and filled with reds from the emergency lights and greens/yellows from the alien structures and hive, there will likely be fog emitted from the hive filling the room it's in, and the hive is also surrounded by small flying creatures called (I think) drifters, which swim around in the air and form the basis of alien construction.

They'll probably look a lot more cohesive when we see the whole thing together.

The game as it currently stands is missing a number of visual effects that will add a great deal to the overall look. Things like particle effects, volumetric lights and so on, that will get added later in the game but will, as Chris says, bring together a much more cohesive look.

Pretty much what everyone said here already. There are still plans for plenty more particle effects, such as mist in hive rooms, floating glowing particulate in the air, dripping water, volumetric lighting, etc. However, the biggest thing missing is the Dynamic Infestation, and once that is in it will really bring all this together. The structures really stand out and clash with the environment at the moment, because they are designed to work with the DI, once that is in the game.
