NS2 Alpha - Ping Times - Server Locations - Questions

Hi..

so i had the idea of buying the Special edition but then i stopped and thought about it for a second..

-> im from EU (ger) and i assume the Development team is Located in the US of A ..meaning the ping id get is between 130 - 190 (pretty much unplayable )

so how big are the odds that game servers will be located in all major areas such as EU *cough* to ensure the NON usa residents a proper ping like 30-60+ ?

So based on the post <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=109986&view=findpost&p=1778536" target="_blank">HERE.</a> the alpha is going to be running on listen servers, meaning that the host of games will be actual players. The best example i can come up with is that it'll be similar to console games in that one player is made host and everyone else connects to him(<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_server" target="_blank">More info</a>).


Edit: im sure people will host games everywhere not just in USA.

Of course that person (hosting) needs a good connection and a good PC or it'll be horrible regardless of location!

and at '200ms' being unplayable I remember the days of dial up and 300 - 400ms latency! How things change.

These are some good questions. How servers gonna be handled in Alpha?
Will there be dedicated server files, so the SE preorders can host themselves? Will UWE host some (any?) server? Will there be listen server functionality in the client? How would one find a server?

P.S.: The forum is picking up steam with the Alpha announcement. Even I registered after being a long time lurker.

yeah, I find it funny that 130-190 is 'unplayable' when as mentioned many of us first played fps games where we would of loved to have pings lower than 190.

Anyway I'm going to take some time and outfit a server for this purpose... but it'll be in western Canada, so that probably doesn't help you. Sorry man!

i hope that "will be " includes the alpha/beta period because if it does not.. it will be kinda lame for everyone who bought NS2 special edition but is located in the non-usa area :/

I might throw a dedicated server up on a 100/100 line which will reside in Sweden :) Then we atleast have a proper server in EU ^^ Depends how the server situation will look though.

They are releasing the win32 binary for the dedicated servers with alpha on Monday, so there will be servers everywhere.

Interesting.. I play on EU servers all the time (US player here) and anything under about 200-250 is playable in my book. Above that and things start teleporting around. As long as the server is running at a decent enough tick (like.. 20 or above AT LEAST), then <250ping is just fine.
