ok they are doing the modeling in 3d max, the thing is a lot of 3d modeling programs are compatable and if one isnt compatable with another theres surely a program thats compatable with both, at the end of the day it all comes down to binary plotting cowardinates for the vertex's and telling them which ones join were.

the issue i find is even though a lot of programs are compatable, there are some that clash when transfuring somthing over, me i have had no end of trouble trying to get my maya stuff into NS 1 useing plugins and still not having things turn out quite right, i guess the instructions arnt too clear, and i have tryed near everything possable to work out how to get it too work but still. i am running into some issues, right now i cant think of what they are its been a long while nearly over a year since i did any hard core maya, since i have been doing a full on visual arts batchlar at univercity err austaralin college.

so if you can get your hands on any 3d modeling program go for it learn develop your grey matter and create something form 1's and 0's

cheack out the modeling tutorials in the forums under the ns one creative area we need more custom modders the communitys sort of gone into lurk mode. and if any one can work out who to get ###### from maya into ns 1 give us a hoy.

the tutorial contains such 3d modeling program names as rhino, maya 3d max milk shape gold somthing theres really a heap out there peoples.

NEX9, getting Maya models into HL is as easy as exporting as .obj and making a friend with 3dsmax do the work for you.

Charlie, Cory and Max at least were all game development pros *before* they started NS 1, so this may not be such a fantastic thing as you thought. However it is nice to see the founding of an independent game developer. Glad UWE managed to get their funding when they did, it would be a pain to get a funding deal in this financial climate.

Our tools are all based around COLLADA, which is an emerging standard for 3D data. If you're familiar with Half-Life/Source, in our pipeline this replaces SMD files. There are already plugins available for 3D Studio MAX, Maya, Blender, Milkshape, you name it, so you can use any tools you like with our art pipeline.

Nice insight, seems exactly the norm for texture creation - AO and Normal maps burned out through max's render-to-texture panel from a high poly model. - I really like using AOs to bring out details and then messing 'em up in Photoshop

A somewhat teedious job but like Ooghi said, once you've ramped up on reusables elements for a texture set it's simply a matter of copy and pasting 'em to suit.

Was nice to see a online example of the texture with normal and spec map, even that it was cam'd from the monitor, gives a good idea of how well the custom engine handles the nm and spec maps. Some direct-feed would have been nice though, although it's nice to be teased sometimes.

    Thanks

    Heya Matt

    Thanks for another great videocast.

Guess you are using the mental ray as your render. Can you tell me what element types in render to texture you are using for the two maps? And if you know what the equivalent would be for vray. Feel free to post your settings if you have time. Hehe. I just started playing with render to texture the other week for a small personal project, so this was really fun to see. Thanks man.

    Hey All,

Thanks for the comments! The first take of this was a lot more technical, but it was pretty boring. If anyone wants to know more about the process, feel free to send me a PM and I'll send you the details of the process.

And I have awesome dancing skills. I was actually making fun of Cory in that dance, but it got edited to make me look stupid...I swear...

Nice Vidcast guys...I haven't played NS myself, but I am working on/practicing 3D art a great deal with the aim of breaking into the Game industry in the future...its things like these vidcasts that keep me inspired and fascinated.

...and what are you doing making fun of people? You're supposed to be working! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

These videos are getting better and better every time. Excellent texture job there. At first i was wondering why not just use a tool like Crazybump to do the normals, and then I saw your results, F-ing beautiful! More please!
