<div class="IPBDescription">vista x64</div>so i had a perfectly working xp machine, installed vista enterprise x64 because i got it free through my school.
after installing the first round of updates, my machine could not connect to the internet after a restart, but sometimes after fiddling with it it would connect. I could never really pinpoint one thing i did to make it work consistently though

flash forward: i removed enterprise due to expiration issues and installed vista business x64 which i also get through my university.
same thing: after installing the first round of updates it wont connect to the internet after a restart, except this time I pinpointed a set of things I can do to make it connect.

1) manually set my ip to 192.168.1.105
2) wait a few minutes
3) set my ip to autoconfig
4) do ipconfig/renew in the command prompt

This CONSISTENTLY fixes the problem. every time. but its just annoying to do every time I start my computer up.

I have no problems connecting on my laptop running vista x32

I think it has something to do with my router, which is a linksys wrt54g

from the steps I take to fix it, it seems that my dhcp is screwing up somewhere and just not assigning me an ip.

I've occasionally had some problems with DHCP on my Vista Home x32 laptop, too. It's also a wrt54g I'm connecting to. It doesn't seem to want to flush its config. Another fun one is when it decides that the router is busy so it won't connect to it. If I just let it sit there for awhile and go away, it eventually thinks the router has become un-busy and connects to it. But, I can't force it to do so, it just has to take its time.

I think it's a problem on both ends, really. Maybe there'll be a firmware update from Linksys sometime soon?

Its a mix between the router not flushing config and what rob said

Perhaps right a batch file that does what you outlined in the OP then add it as a scheduled task for whenever the computer starts up? Though that is more of a workaround then a fix.
