Looks like the forums are dead

Time for some Revival ;]

I'm an OLD member! Way back when Natural-Selection used to be 1.4, and before that version.

Those who remember me, BlackPlague, and for those who don't, have fun!

Let's revive the game folks! This is one game that I still play =]

    Psh. This is where people come to <i>not</i> talk about NS.

    But yea, slow, not dead. When NS2 is released, these forums will flourish.

    And yea, I kinda remember you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    I agree, they are sort of slow... but not dead. I think combat mode, the lack of recent updates to NS, and most importantly, the release of TF2 took a heavy toll on the life of this mod.

    This is the only part of the forums I frequent, and I used to do so because people always posted fun games and stuff here... People need to post more multiplayer games for us all to go play.

    p.s. I don't remember you... Though i do remember Caboose.

    Well yeah, I agree. Not dead, just not flourishing.

    Ah yes, I remember BlackPlague. The forums aren't quite dead, off-topic is still populated by most of the regulars but we haven't had many new comers in a long time. Yeah, so welcome back.

    Dead?

    Well, some parts did, such as customization (one of my favorites *sob*)

    Off-Topic is alive and kicking though <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    I think we should put down a committee to arrange more fun and games here in OT. The Dwarf Fortress threads are awesome - I'm thinking more of that. Anyone have some party games?

    Totally agree. We need to set up times, get on a teamspeak server, and have fun.

    I can think of a few free online games we could try.
    TA-spring (remake of Total Annihilation, it's free. Tons of fun. Up to 16 players)
    Soldat (Free 2d shooter, much fun)

    I vote for Spring, I love that game so much.

    Disagree on both counts.

    I played Spring once. My commander got stuck in the level and it was a huge waste of time.

    Surprising. How long ago did you play? They continually turn out new versions and at this point the game is fully functional/very few errors. There is a sizable community as well.

    It was within the last year... I just wasn't impressed. There didn't seem to be any advantage to playing Spring over the original TA. The 3d graphics in spring seemed poorly done and the UI is worse than in TA.

    Well as far as advantage... Spring is actually balanced and playable online with a sizable community, I'm not sure what else to say about that...

    I'll make a thread for it tomorrow and see how things go.

    Sounds good.
    Lets start:

    You are participating in a quizshow.
    The quizmaster tells you that there are 3 boxes. Under 2 boxes there is nothing and under 1 box there are the keys to your potentially new car.

    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->|??|....|??|....|??|
    |__|....|__|....|__|
    3 boxes and you just dont know, where the car keys are.<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    The quizmaster tells you to choose a box.
    You choose a box.
    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->........MINE........
    |??|....|??|....|??|
    |__|....|__|....|__|
    3 boxes and you chose one of them<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    Now the quizmaster opens one of the not chosen boxes, that contains nothing. (He can do that, cause there are 2 empty boxes and who knows where the keys are.)

    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->........MINE........
    |..|....|??|....|??|
    |__|....|__|....|__|
    1 chosen closed, 1 revealed empty and 1 closed box.<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    Now there are 2 boxes with an unknown content and 1 box that has been revealed to be empty.
    The quizmaster offers you to trade your chosen box for the other closed box.
    Is it a good idea to trade boxes?

    Or to be more mathematical: What are the chances for every box, to contain the key when the quizmaster asks you to trade boxes?

    I'm guessing it doesn't matter? at first your odds were 33.3%, but after he unveils the empty box, your odds are 50% it's in the one you already chose and 50% that it's in the other one. if there's some deeper ramifications of the quizmaster's choice on the odds, I can't see it. presumably, he can't reveal the one with the keys, so maybe he revealed the only other empty box besides the one you chose, or maybe he had a choice of which empty box to reveal because you chose the keys... but since you're not prithee to this info, it's still 50/50 odds, no?

    or does it go like this... the fact that you had a 67% chance of picking an empty box means he had a 67% chance of having no choice in which box he picked (the only other empty one) - and therefore, since he had a 2 out of 3 chance of having no choice, your odds are improved by switching?

    I sure as hell can't put numbers on these chances. I haven't actually thought about math in like 10 years.

    You should always trade boxes. You have a 1 in 3 chance of getting it right the first guess and a 1 in 2 chance of getting it right if you trade boxes. No argument about this please, there are about a million pages online if you feel like looking.
  • AlignAlign Remain Calm Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 5216Forum Moderators, Constellation
    Mathematically, you should change box.
    In practice, it doesn't matter.
