Upcoming game from GPG
So, Chris Taylor's Gas Powered Games (Dungeon Siege, Supreme Commander) got a new game coming up, Demigod.

Basically, it expands the concept of the popular Warcraft III map Defense of the Ancients to a commercial product. You get to choose a Demigod to control instead of a faction. The two main types are the General type, which lets you build up an army and play the game kinda like an RTS, and the Assassin type, which lets you play the game like an Action-RPG.

Anyway, not much information has surfaced yet, and the game isn't bound to come out until late 2008, but I'm pretty hyped. DoTA is a great concept, and I love both Supreme Commander and Dungeon Siege.

Discuss!

[edit] Found an interview and an early preview here. Apparently the game will be using the Supreme Commander engine.[/edit]

Those screenshots look pretty nuts :O . They're not ingame screenshots, right? õ_õ

I've never played Dota, so I don't quite know anything about how the gamestyle feels. Once I thought I'd try, but apparently saying "Hey, it's my first time" gets you all sorts of kicks and bans. But the strategy/action-rpg idea sounds pretty original.

I guess I should start selling my organs to buy a powerful enough computer to run it.

Gas Powered Games is good when it comes to Real Time Strategy and rather bland when it comes to RPGs. I wonder what happens when they combine the two.

If I had a second-to-third-rate franchise like Dungeon Siege, I'd pimp it out too. Who cares what happens to it as long as daddy gets a cut?

This is just a guess, but I don't think GPG got a dime out of the Dungeon Siege movie. Most developers have to agree to turn the rights to the intellectual property over to the publisher in order to get a contract. Since GPG's actual involvement in the movie was probably nil or very close to it, and the IP isn't their's either, they wouldn't be entitled to any sort of revenue.

Of course, it's quite possible that their publisher is using the money THEY got out of the movie to fund GPG. Sounds fair, at least.

Shameless *bump* of my own thread, since the beta has been out for some time now and I figured that some fellow forumites might be in it. I'm contemplating preordering myself, but I'm not entirely sure of if it's worth my money. Any input?
  • locallyunscenelocallyunscene Feeder of Trolls Join Date: 2002-12-25 Member: 11528Members, Constellation
I'm in the beta and I think Gem is too(all you have to do is preorder). The game is really fun when you get to play it, but it currently has two problems. The main problem is there is not enough people so it's hard to find a game. The second problem is the lag is pretty bad, which is at least partially due to the low player count. I've played some good games with reasonable lag, but I've also encountered completely unplayable games. There are bots, but after 2 or 3 games they pose no challenge.

Worth the pre order is hard to say. It has potential, but the game is in BETA. I put beta in caps because this isn't "play the game early prerelease weekend beta" but "working out serious bugs beta".

Yup, I'm in the beta too :3

I agree with local said though I feel it's worth adding that in the current version generals and assassins are fairly similar. You can play a general pretty much the same way as the assassins with no real issues. The only difference is that generals can summon and assassins don't. They might change it later but I'm doubtful :p

It's like a cross between DotA and an art book designed by an artist who was told "design something that can emulate DotA without infringing on Blizzard's copyright."

But EVERYONE likes DotA. Obviously you haven't been paying attention. And besides, even if you didn't love DotA, Demigod is coming from above and making it all right.

If you don't like DotA because it's horribly unbalanced, because the interface isn't really set up for it, because the community is horrible, because it's tough to get good games, because you lose all sense of progression when the game ends, because you don't like the weird half-Warcraft half-made up universe it's set in or the lack of any consistent story or art, or because you're too cool for it, then Demigod is a good option, but if you have some other complaint then I don't see why you'd bother with Demigod. I mean, if you hated Diablo II, the chances of your liking Titan Quest are pretty low.

    It can happen, though.

My first impression of Dota was me and three other newbies getting ridiculously owned by a single veteran. Maybe I should give this a try.
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
Yeah that's a problem that Demigod won't share, or if it does, that's only a coincidence. In fact that's not even a good reason to dislike DotA.

Not to mention the quality music Dota has inspired.

My first experience with DotA was me and a bunch of veterans in a room, half of the room against the other half, and when using some snake woman ended up in 3rd place. Throwing nets to stop people from escaping, sleep-ing everyone nearby so they cant hurt me, turning into 4 indistinguishable clones which can all deal damage... ######rox.

Not gotten to play it since, though.
  • spellman23spellman23 NS1 Theorycraft Expert Join Date: 2007-05-17 Member: 60920Members
I will admit that DotA can be pretty crap. Especially on Bnet with all the jerks.

However, I enjoy messing around with DotA at LANs, so we do stuff like try to have even teams and explain heroes to new players, so it's much more rewarding.

I absolutely adore DotA, and probably play it more than any other game. The sheer variety of encounters is what makes it good. Fine, it's got a nasty learning curve, but so does/did every other modification. We've been softened by being spoon fed Tutorials on everything.
