vsync

I just turned vsync off, set developer 1, and set fps_max 101, and then set my monitor hz to 100.

I'm getting a lot of tearing and choppy fps. Computer specs:

AMD Athlon64 3200+
1gb Corsair (2x 512) memory
GeForce 6600gt 128 mb

That should be everything relevant. No viruses that I know of (running an updated scanner).

Thanks for your time.

Wow...maybe I should turn v-sync on to get rid of all the problems you mentioned.

Is it just in big areas with lot of players/models or in general?

Did you make sure that steam doesn't screw your fps by taking too much cpu power?

I was testing this in the ns_tanith readyroom on a local server with no additional players.

I don't know where I would check this.

    Thanks again in any case.

    near as i can tell:

if you have your fps higher than your refresh rate (vsynch off) then the screen updates itself in bits and pieces = tearing (of everything, not just models)

it makes tracking really hard, but you -can't- play a hl1 or quake1/2 game with less than 100fps, you're shooting yourself in the foot.

Isn't my hz the same as my refresh rate? My monitor is registering at 100 hz. Seems strange if that's the cause, doesn't it?

is it a crt or lcd?

when i first got my lcd monitor any game running over 60fps would create tearing, so i just chucked v-sync on and it worked fine.
Also any hl1 based game/mod caused tearing as well as some choppyness (even though my frame rate seemed smooth with net_graph 3 enabled)

so schkorpio recommends to enable VSYNC - your game will still run as fast as it can, but vsync as the name suggests will syncronise your frame rate to your monitors refresh rate - which will eliminate the tearing and choppyness.

in my experience it doesnt matter what you set the fps_max to, vsync will slow it down to your monitors refresh rate, but setting it the same as your monitor can't hurt either.

Where did you set your monitor to 100Hz, and are you sure your monitor actually supports a 100Hz refresh. Some of them will accept 100Hz inputs but will down sample to their 60 or 80.

I play with fps of 100 with 80Hz refresh on my monitor and the tearing is barely noticeable.
