Flares

I just found back some very old ideas I had back in the days
I'm been so absent in gaming, in general, but there's one mod I will never forget and that's NS <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
So many memories here on the boards and in the game!
I'm gonna make some topics now with ideas, I hope they haven't been suggested yet, and if so, I hope an admin can merge my posts with existing topics

Ok here we go!

It would be cool to have a rifle with a grenade launcher attached to the barrel that not only fires grenades but also flares to light up the environment in darker areas. Kinda like in the Alien vs Predator movie or Final Fantasy the Spirits Within. With a nice red, blue or green color of course and sweet eye candy sparks

Why? Cause it looks cool and it can be used all the time, unlike a flashlight that runs on batteries
oh yeah, that might be another suggestion, having a flashlight that can run out of power
Imagine beeing in a dark corridor and all of a sudden your flashlight stops working
Time for the aliens to move in <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Tell me what you think, i know it's just a small idea, but i'm a freak about the little things and details, they can really make or break a game

Cheers !

This could be very interesting. I see one major problem though and it resides in the maps. For a flare to be effective, you need a high ceilinged room or a place with no ceiling. The flare lights up whatever is below as it falls. I don't know of many maps where this could be profitable, as most maps are built with a "space station" or "ship" design in mind. Also in my view, nade launcher attachement that would shoot both nades and flares defeats the purpose of having the GL incorporated in the game. Make it single use flare attachment, and then you're talking.

This could be a great addition to a game on a vanilla server, but problem is, a lot of servers actually have the nightvision plugin that renders the flashlight useless. Imagine this scenario...

Player1: Ok, lets go in guys... We've all got the NVG goggles on.
Player2, 3 and 4: Yepperz... time to pwn!!
    *Player5 shoots a flare.
    Player1, 2, 3, 4: Waaaaa! I'm blind! You nub! Who's the idi***?!

Good ideas Dark, just need a little refining IMO.
    Any other inputs?

hmmz, what if it's flares that stick to objects
    sticky flares

you could shoot them on a wall or ceiling and there it will remain, emitting light for a limited time

but you're right about the GL issue, this flare thing should be something seperate on the rifle

or maybe they could just be flares you throw manual, of course the range will be shorter than when fired with a launcher

Flares, and other tools of detection in areas of low light are also discussed in this thread:

    <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=102445" target="_blank">New Marine Flashlight</a>

Here is one dealing with it specifically, did you try searching for key word "flare" or "flares"?

    <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=102181" target="_blank">Flares / Dark Rooms</a>

If you had ran a search bases on lighting or lights, I bet you would have found even more threads.

Oh well, live and learn, I hope.

Alright, I did a quick search but I guess I overlooked the other flares thread

now maybe you could give some feedback on the ideas instead of playing Mr. Smartguy?

his feed back is probably already in one of the previous threads <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

i personally don't like the idea of darkness - aliens can cloak so whether a hallway has lights or not makes no difference to the gameplay, as for atmosphere darkness is annoying, but mood lighting is great, people need to be able to see where they are going.

I don't mind the flares idea, but just not sure it has a place in NS because of its fast nature - my 2cents would be that flares do multiple things, light up an area, uncloak aliens/structures, and act as a "PING" so that you can throw a flare into a room and if its within a siege cannon's range it will fire in the direction of the flare.

That 'ping' thing a good idea actually, seems a bit more realistic than the scanner sweeps

not sure about the uncloaking tho, there's many lights in the maps that don't have an effect on cloaking, would be weird if flares did
