<div class="IPBDescription">..yes another thread D=</div>Okay so my computer is getting pretty aged now, setup as follows...
2.4 GhZ Celeron D Processor
1GB PC2100 DDR1 SDRAM
160GB Maxtor 7200RPM IDE HD
Gigabite Nvidia 6600GT 128MB 8xAGP
ASRock P4i65G Motherboard (<a href="http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=P4i65G" target="_blank">Spec Sheet</a>)
It doesn't run games all that great. HL2 barely hits 20FPS on low settings, pretty much thinking the CPU & RAM being so cheap, crappy and old holding it back. I'm on a tight budget and I want something that can play old games well and possibly some next gen, but <i>atleast</i> play HL2 nicely.
Proposed new specifications:
2GhZ AMD 64
1GhZ DDR2 PC6400
ASRock Motherboard with 8x AGP graphics (I'm pretty keen on ASRock, always good budget in my opinion)
- - -
160GB Maxtor 7200RPM IDE HD
Gigabite Nvidia 6600GT 128MB 8xAGP
So I looked up and thought about these replacements...

I'm buying from Aria.co.uk like I always do and it's going to cost in the region of £105 including delivery if I'm patient and £120 if I am impatient. I'm basically asking for your guys opinions on this budget upgrade, if it's worth it, will do what I want gaming and application wise, and/if to make any changes around the budget of
£120 maximum.
Personally I want to go for it but I'm not up to date with everything technically and compatability wise which is another reason I'm asking for advice. I don't want to find out my motherboard and processor don't get on, which I know a few people have had in the past for Venice Core'd AM2's atleast.

Get 2gig of ram. Gets the comp outta the soup it will be down in with 1gig.

indeed.
currently RAM is the cheapest and most effective (bang for your £) way to upgrade your computer.

Also, the intel core duo's are getting a lot cheaper soon.
lol.. "bang for your pound"... that doesn't quite have the ring to it that that the original American idiom does.. amusing little linguistic anecdote there.
"Quash for your quid" perhaps? "Push for your Pound"?
I'm wracking my brain to come up with a comparable awkwardly humorous UK English -> American English idiom translation and realizing in the process that I don't watch enough UK TV.

It's exactly the same as the normal stuff and from what I see all it has is a funky ATi heatsink.

4 gigs of ram is a waste if you dont already have a 8800GTS 640MB or a GTX.
Are you going sli? Don't its a gimmick and a waste unless you have money to burn or a 30in monitor. You are better off putting that into a quad core.
Dont know if you know, but PCI express v2 is on the way as well, might wanna wait a little longer.
In 4 months the market will look abit different, allegedly both intel and Nvidia will introduce the next-gen chips in Q4, so it's gonna hard to recommend anything now.
Also, I would recommend against buying that expensive, a good budget PC can these days be very powerful <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
A few weeks ago I bought all the parts for a high-end computer for 750£, however I'm kicking myself not to go a slightly cheaper road to 500£ since the difference would have been neglible.
*'bang for your buck'
Also, I second what Warrior said.

Lol, you actually corrected him. gg. Bang for your dollar makes just as much sense.
