APC Battery Backup Issues: can USB ports be 'weak'?

<div class="IPBDescription">... and other possibilities</div>My APC Battery Backup "Back-UPS ES 725" has stopped working - the message returned is, "<b>USB Device Recognized</b> One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."

The card reader slot to the left of it works fine, and the USB port to the right of this one also works fine. Tried the USB port on the back of the tower (where the keyboard is plugged in) and got the same message. Rebooting the computer did not help.

A visit to the APC Knowledge Base asked me to ensure the Human Interface Device (HID) drivers are already
installed (they were), confirm that your PC's USB ports are enabled (have done this by checking the device manager AND trying other things in the same port), and check the BIOS to see if "Advanced Power Management – Needs to be disabled, USB Legacy Device – Needs to be enabled" - I saw neither.

This stopped working in the middle of nothing - I left the house and when I came back I saw the warning for the apc.

Seems to me it's either the connecting cable or the unit itself. But the Knowledge Base sugegsted it might be a "weak" port. How do you check for weakness? What else could it be?

A little deeper diggin revealed another possible solution, WHICH WORKED!
<ol type='1'><li>Uninstall the 'Unknown device' in the Device Manager, USB controller</li><li>Unplug the USB cable to the APC</li><li>Turn the PC completely off</li><li>Power cycle the APC</li><li>Start the computer</li><li>Plug the USB cable back in when completely booted</li></ol>
