why do the marines look like robocop? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/marine.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::marine::" border="0" alt="marine.gif" />
maybe something like a full head helmet that covers the entire face. that way you dont have to show the same frozen facial expression all the time.
i've been google image searching looking at other games hats/helmets and alot of them have visors and cover the entire head..
(lawl a cool admin punish would be a sped helmet to mark noobs <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> )

I would suggest that a marine looks like robocop because they are infact bionic (cybernetically enhanced) men, brought on by exposure to all those nanites. Otherwise, how could a marine possibly be healed or ammo loaded instantaneously with nanite packs?
Also notice that marines have a Heads Up Display, a Graphical User Interface, armor that is damaged but doesn't break off, weapons stored away where you don't see them (the hip?), and modules (JP & HA) that can be grafted on.
The TSA marine is very close to being RoboCop. They lack the sophisticated targeting system (though there is the circles for motion tracking) or real time playback window (waiting to spawn spectator?) but perhaps those are possible tech upgrade branches...
Perhaps we should wonder if the TSA marine is not in fact a android, a robot that merely made to look like a human!
It does inspire one to realize the sheer possible ideas for expanding on the gameplay of a TSA marine - why not graft a nanite upgradeable weapon platform to a marine? Shoulder mounted rockets? Auto tracking turret shoulder mount? Heavy weapon waist harness? Tech enhanced hand and fore arm? All purpose blaster with tech upgrades?
Think about it, RoboCop had all kinds of cool toys, why can't we?
How about we just replace the marine model with a Master Chief. ROFL. Imagine 16 Spartan-117s running around all over the place. I mean after all, the point of MasterChief is not to have a face as bungie said because they want every halo fan to feel like one (which fulfills their fantasies of being the MasterChief - because no one knows what he looks like).
I agree with a full helmet. I don't see why a technologically advanced organization such as the TSA would allow their marines to leave the better part of their face uncovered only to be torn off by an alien. I would also like to think there is some type of toxicity to aliens. Also, a helmet would save so much time with having to do facial expressions and having to make different faces.
I definitely vote against the full helmet. Giving marines a full helmet dehumanizes them. It becomes harder to identify with your fellow faceless rines when they are out of your monkeysphere, and also makes it less fun for aliens to chew on them. I actually vote that the visor be semitransparent so we can see their eyes, since that plays a big role in how human we see them as.
I mean psychologically, if someone is faceless, we find it harder to compare them to ourselves, and therefore are less likely to empathize with them. It's part of the reason why we can see the Combine as an oppressive force in HL2 instead of wondering if they have <a href="http://www.hlcomic.com/index.php?date=2006-05-17" target="_blank">family</a> or <a href="http://www.hlcomic.com/index.php?date=2006-05-20" target="_blank">friends</a>
I was under the assumption that Marines were Cyborgs. Full helmets have an assault feel to them and if I were trying to defend myself on a ship, you better believe thats what I want. I think this whole debate of helmets and such could be ended quite easily with having a choice of what type of armor it is. Basic armor perhaps, is like a standard in NS. Each level of upgraded armor could add a better piece of armor that you can actually see and then for the final level of armor would be a full helmet.

I actually quite approve of this suggestion.
It'd be nice to see the Marines looking a little more enclosed with every upgrade, if possible. Level3+ looking more Jin-Roh than human, I'm visualising.

How else would they be able to breathe in the spores?

I know this may seem silly at this point but it does kinda make sense - the same way armor and medical aid is applied instanteously: nanites.
Nanites could be given instructions to be in the lungs and air ways to filter out harmful spores.
But then why does the Lerk green spores cause damage?
I wouldn't mind a full helmet either, with full frontal "window", which in fact if you look closely, you would see the reverse of the players Graphical User Interface ... that is unless the GUI could be said to be imprinted on the eyes directly. Kind of like what you see on the computer screen is seen through the front of your helmet.
Hmm, if I had a full helmet, I would hope it sported the ability to turn "sun glasses" on, so bright and harmful lights don't get ya in the eyes either.
Off-Topic reply to Wankalot: It's more that these spores though are active and living (and like many things in the Kharaa, collectively show sentience) and just as hostile to enemies as the multi-cellular attack lifeforms. It's not so much that it's acid, more that it's an aggressive airborne cloud of Kharaa biomass. Which attacks marines and their equivalent (nanites) as willed by the collective (specifically the lerk). Armor is deteriorated in the same way that any fungi can dissolve and "rot" away materials. Remember, the Kharaa share some traits with bacteria, fungi, and animals -- that is if we were trying to classify that alien race into our known taxonomy system.
Back on topic, I want to highlight approval for Shockwave's suggestion of Jin-Roh which I'd imagine many haven't heard of: <img src="http://www.santaquiteria.net/wp-content/fgallery/200x/Jin-Roh.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Like someone suggested before me in this thread; I'd like to see marines outfit changing when doing upgrades to armor. Final armor wouldnt show any skin on marines.

Level 2 - Gloves
Level 3 - Helmet?
Thats really sketchy right now, but its just ideas.

So for me the face does not have to be exposed for spores to make sense.
