    I'm not on IRC any more 'cos my uni blocks it and every attempt to get around the block fails. Miserably.

    I can fix your blockage X_stickman. I had the same problem.

    you need a program called <a href="http://www.your-freedom.net/" target="_blank">your freedom</a> and a program called sockscap.

    There is more two it but it's complicated so if you feel like having a go and if you get stuck ask me and I'll try to find someone that can help. Basically your freedom makes a local proxy on your machine then collects all the banned stuff from your nearest your freedom server. Sockscap works with your freedoms proxy and makes virtual ports for things like mirc etc. But not steam. Which is annoying but still remediable with proxycap!

    It's all well beyond my understanding but it works.

    Or you could use a free program, like <a href="http://tor.eff.org/" target="_blank">Tor</a>, combined with a few other tools that are bundled on that site.
