I usually go after the mines first, as it's nice to have a cushion of money. Once you capture, say, Chitzena, train up as many milita as you can, so they'll hold the mine for you (and help capture the rest of the town if you haven't already). Once you've got a couple mines you should be able to support about 2 full squads of mercs, which is a pretty good amount for a while. Always make sure you get a very capable medic, and keep enough med supplies on hand to let him/her cure any nasty bullet wounds you might accquire; otherwise you'll just bleed to death after finishing a fight.

I think you have to actually be physically at the airport to order stuff online; it never seems to come for me if I don't order it from there. You still get deliveries even if you haven't cleard out any of the SAM sights; they don't shoot down Bob's Guns' shipments. It's easiest to fight in daylight; at night time or in the rain really limits your visibility. Unless you want to pull some crazy ninja stuff, like sneaking up behind people and stabbing them, daylight will make sure you don't get too many nasty surprises during firefights.

Don't feel rushed or anything; it's often quite helpful to park a couple of your mercs in a city to train militia while everyone else practices something. I usually tell them to practice marksmanship since I enjoy hitting the target, but if you've got any weaklings tell them to "Practice Health" and their health will go up pretty fast. It's very helpful.

A mechanic on hand who can disarm traps and pick the locks on doors and containers is useful if you want to get all the neat items that you can find, and also for repairing your equipment. You'll often find better guns and armor on dead people, but the armor especially is going to be a little worthless until you repair it to tip top shape.

Let's say you have 2 clips of pistol ammo (9x18mm, for example) which hold 12 shots each and 2 clips of SMG 9x18mm ammo that hold 30 shots each. If you unload your SMG and load the pistol ammo into it, then unload it again, your merc will take the pistol clips and consolidate them into SMG clips. This is very useful because an SMG clip holds much more, and you can even reload pistols with them (I think), so you can just have one guy change all your pistol clips into SMG clips, letting you carry more.

9 times out of 10, it's better to fire while crouched/prone, even though it takes action points to change your stance. The increase in accuracy and the decrease in your vulnerability are worth it. Hold down "Alt" while someone's moving to make them back up instead of turn and move in that direction. Hit "Shift + R" to tell the entire squad to reload (very handy). When you move around in real-time, before you spot any enemies, have everyone crouch down. They move pretty fast and when combat starts they'll already be crouched.

I'm open to tips also. I just got in to this game too, about a week ago. I actually don't know where the SAM sites are; do you have to find the pilot first? Because I haven't bothered tracking him down yet.

I found him in the swamp to the left of dressen (sp?) although I think it randomized for each play through but he should be in that area. The pilot told me of a SAM site to the right of dressen at the bottom of the lake (1-2 spaces to the left of the mine area)

After finding the pilot which is randomized in a swampy area around drassen, he will tell you the location of the first SAM site. After you take that SAM site he should eventually tell you the location of the other SAM sites.

Also, holy hell I've been playing this game for the past week... what are the odds of one of you blokes making a forum thread about it.

JA2 is my second favourite isometric TRPG ever, with the first being Fallout 2. (hmmm... maybe I should boot up fallout 2 again for some sexual gratification, er, I mean... gunfights. Yeah, gunfights.)

It's kinda funny, in the years I've had the game (it's so awesome) I've never once <i>not</i> fought at night. Nightfighting is incredibly cheapass thing to do in the game, making any mission 100% easier. This is because you simply don't take the volume of firepower back and with night fighting+night vision goggles battles with normal soldiers is a massacre. The real trick in the game is fighting indoors though <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Also, I totally love the robot. I think he's one of the most useful things in the game you can get, especially for indoor ops.

Then again, he is kinda crap and additionally, I don't save and reload at all (HARDCORE M I!!!!) so I have a pretty artificial impression of him.

No you don't have have be at the airport to order things online. The simple test is to be somewhere random and send what-is-her-beak (the Dictator, horrible with names I am) some roses. It's good fun incidentally. The key thing with stuff at the airport is to ask the dude there and check your email. I'm not sure, which triggers it, but generally if the crates are closed there is stuff at the airport, if they are open no. Oh and keep an eye on the idiot who looks after the airport too.

Otherwise stuff will arrive over time. I usually build up huge stockpiles of anything I can think of. Dunno why really, I just feel the need to buy guns even if I don't need them.

Find the first one and take it. You'll then be given the locations of all the others. Generally, they are pretty hard to take and the helicopter is expensive, but the mobility it affords is awesome.

You can also try looking for the icecream truck if you need another means of transportation. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

<i>"All armies are the same size at night."</i>

This game sounds pretty interesting. I should pick it up.

    It's also ###### hard <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

It's got a really great combat system though. Nice amount of depth to it and the fact that it's real time out of combat and TB for combat is the model more games should use of its sort. Fighting at night means you're almost blind, but you can stab people (and who doesn't like stabbing people) much easier.

By far the game is most interesting fighting indoors like several of the underground bunkers in the game.

Also, ALWAYS and I seriously mean this, ALWAYS play with science-fiction stuff off. Trust me.

Note to self: SMG's are not as accurate as a sniper rifle when firing into a crowd of civilians to get one soldier.

    Oops.

Chitzena = gun heaven, managed to get a Ak5 on the first play through (had to reload), then a SKS (had to reload again) and then a mini 14 and a H&K G3A3 from Annie (who is the bounty MOM).

now how do you cut off her head? I've got the machete and the quests for it. you'd think lopping off someone's head was easier than it is :\

anyone tried the JA 1.13 mod? I've heard it's basically mandatory. It adds alot of new features, items, mercs, etc.

I'll give it a try and report back here

    <a href="http://ja2v113.schtuff.com/features" target="_blank">JA 1.13 mod features page</a>

also how do you get Bobby Ray's the online weapon retailer?

I've been playing with 1.13 since the beginning. It's basically essential as far as I'm concerned.

haven't played JA or JA2 in like 10 years =d

awesome games, but as has been said, quite hard (or easy if you save all the time). it's frustrating to have one of your mercs you've been training since day one die to a stray bullet because you walked one space too far or something.

I can't remember if I beat JA2. I did beat JA1 I'm pretty sure. full squad with hardened spectra shields = walking tank, I remember that much.

I didn't remember indoor combat being that hard. just have to wait for idiot NPCs to walk through a doorway, or wait til your whole squad is gathered with full AP to charge on through. I don't remember too clearly though. the RNG was pretty cruel sometimes at any rate.

The most irritating part of this game I've found is when the enemy will <i>always</i> interrupt you in some situations no matter what. For an example, there was this soldier hunkered down inside a building in Grumm, I have one of my mercs at the front of the building shooting randomly through the window because everytime I attempt to move the merc into a nice position the soldier inside will insta-kill my merc with a full burst.

So I sneak <i>another</i> merc around the back of the building. Absolutely sneaky, and I peek through a window <i>behind</i> the soldier inside the building. Now, if you were the soldier, you would likely be paying attention to the guy shooting through the window in front of you, not paying attention to the <b>sneaking</b> merc 180 degrees <b>directly behind you</b>. But everytime, no matter which way I did it, even from 20 odd spaces away, the soldier would spin around and pop a few rounds into the second merc's head.

Eventually I was so irritated by this soldier I tossed a mustard gas grenade through the front window and waited until I heard the happy slump sound. The first few times I did this the soldier actually walked out of the mustard gas cloud towards my first merc, and managed to shoot that merc dead. So I eventually figured it out just to move the merc after tossing the gas grenade...

Anyway, that really bothered me. Along with anytime the soldiers 100% of the time will be able to interrupt your mercs, even when they're behind them.... Bleh!

Also, I have not yet played with the 1.13 patch, but I intend to install it as soon as I finish the current game I'm on. Does the 1.13 patch work on the JA2 version that is <i>not</i> the gold version?
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
I find it perfectly realistic that one guy hiding in a room will be able to watch a window and a door. I mean, it takes what, half a second to turn your head? You just turn so you're halfway facing both, and nobody is going to be able to sneak in without you getting a shot off. I mean honestly in real life SWAT teams don't just run in through the back door and shoot everyone before the criminals turn around. Your best bet is some sort of explosive or something to incapacitate them.

Dart gun + darts. I've personally never used them, but supposedly they are non-lethal.

You could also teargas people into unconciousness, or shoot a really heavily armoured person repeatedly with hollowpoint until they collapse from the exhaustion of being shot for 1 damage 10 times in a row.

You could punch them twice, they usually go down at that point. You can also ctrl + click on their temporarily unconscious body and sometimes you'll steal their gun.

Reminds me of my most interesting 1 on 1 fight. I guess something was slightly bugged or something because I was crouched at night firing at a very tough enemy. However, for some reason, the enemy never moved or reacted, giving me plenty of time to wear him down.

Heh. Two of my mercs are camouflaged at night, moving west towards Chitzena. Encounter an enemy force of four soldiers at night.

Needless to say, there was much throat-slittage.

I learned a valuable lesson, you can never bring enough ammo to a gunfight (or several in my case)

My IMP with a C7 with 3 mags of ammo, a bipod, laser sight and the 100 drum add on(no drums).

half way through liberating the south part of chitzena he ran dry and have to fall back on his makarov and fox who had a tommy gun was down to he last mag plus I ran out of med kits, it was a fun run back to dressen to get more supplies (after I trained a good militia of course.)

Sometimes during nightfights when you can see them but they can't see you, they will conveniently 'forget' that you're shooting at them and they won't take cover or move.

It happens... relatively often, in that you'll see it more then once per game.

Fox has by far, the best one liners in the game. I'm not going to quote any of them for fear of spoiling their awesome factor. Suffice to say, put fox and grizzly in a merc squad together (my two favourite mercs aside from Shadow) and you will never regret it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

My mercs don't say much to each other (except for when they want to stop and rest.

the one who talks most on my team is the gus guy from the M.E.R.C site (can never remember his name, he's got good mech.)

also, does it matter if I put my sun goggles or NVG inside the helmet slots or does it have to go on the head slots?
